The h<strong>and</strong>some fungus beetles<br />

This family occurs in North, Central, <strong>and</strong> South<br />

America. The <strong>on</strong>ly previously published West Indian<br />

records seem to be from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Lesser Antilles.<br />

Most species seem to feed <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> spores <strong>and</strong> s<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>t<br />

tissues <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> fungi. They may be collected <strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> under<br />

bark or in leaf litter, <strong>and</strong> may graze <strong>on</strong> bark<br />

surfaces. Some are stored product pests.<br />

The lady beetles<br />

Most species are predators as adults <strong>and</strong> larvae.<br />

The most comm<strong>on</strong> prey are aphids, mealybugs,<br />

<strong>and</strong> scale insects. Some Epilachninae feed <strong>on</strong> leaves<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> solanaceous or cucurbitaceous plants, <strong>and</strong><br />

Psylloborini are mildew feeders. An important early<br />

reference <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Cuba</str<strong>on</strong>g>n fauna is Dimmock (1906).<br />

Fern<strong>and</strong>ez Garcia (1998) lists species in sugar cane<br />

fields.<br />
