tions <strong>of</strong> about 200 new beetle species (Zayas 1988).
These last descriptions were extracted from <strong>the</strong> very
large manuscript for volume 4, on <strong>Cuba</strong>n beetles,
completed in l965, for <strong>the</strong> Entom<strong>of</strong>auna <strong>Cuba</strong>na
series. Regrettably, this still remains unpublished.
His very large collection is still at his old family
home in Havana (Ivie 1991).
O<strong>the</strong>r Workers and Collections
In addition to <strong>the</strong> collectors and collections mentioned
above <strong>the</strong>re are o<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>of</strong> lesser importance
in <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> <strong>Cuba</strong>n beeetles. Additional information
on past and present locations and conditions <strong>of</strong>
insect and o<strong>the</strong>r zoological collections is in Aguayo
(1950), Alvarez (1958), Chardon (1949), Hernández
(1972) and Silva (1994). Working reference collections
are in various applied research institutes such
as The Forestry Institute in Havana.
The Manuel Barro collection contains about
2,500 insects <strong>of</strong> which 85% are chrysomelid beetles.
It is held as an historical collection in <strong>the</strong> National
Museum <strong>of</strong> Natural History, La Havana.
The Romanian and <strong>Cuba</strong>n Academies <strong>of</strong> Sciences
sponsored a joint series <strong>of</strong> expeditions to investigate
<strong>the</strong> cave, litter, soil, groundwater and
o<strong>the</strong>r invertebrate faunas <strong>of</strong> <strong>Cuba</strong>. The expeditions
were from 9 March to 18 June, l969; 3 November
to 12 December, 1970; and 3 February to 4 June,
1973. The results were published in a series <strong>of</strong> four
volumes by <strong>the</strong> Romanian Academy <strong>of</strong> Sciences
(Orghidan et al. 1973, 1977, 1981, 1983), and volumes
1 and 2 provide lists and descriptions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>
collecting sites. Several papers are on cave and noncave
collections <strong>of</strong> beetles. The cave beetles have
been summarized by Peck et al. (1998). While many
species <strong>of</strong> cave specialized arthropods occur in <strong>Cuba</strong>,
no known cave-specialized species <strong>of</strong> beetles occur
<strong>the</strong>re. The beetle specimens from <strong>the</strong>se expeditions
are scattered in <strong>the</strong> collections <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> authors <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>
papers describing <strong>the</strong> species or may be in Romania,
at <strong>the</strong> “Emile Racovitza” Institute <strong>of</strong> Speleology
in Bucharest. Not all collections from <strong>the</strong>se expeditions
have been studied and remain in
Bucharest.
