These last descripti<strong>on</strong>s were extracted from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> very<br />

large manuscript for volume 4, <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Cuba</str<strong>on</strong>g>n beetles,<br />

completed in l965, for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Entom<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>auna <str<strong>on</strong>g>Cuba</str<strong>on</strong>g>na<br />

series. Regrettably, this still remains unpublished.<br />

His very large collecti<strong>on</strong> is still at his old family<br />

home in Havana (Ivie 1991).<br />

O<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r Workers <strong>and</strong> Collecti<strong>on</strong>s<br />

In additi<strong>on</strong> to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> collectors <strong>and</strong> collecti<strong>on</strong>s menti<strong>on</strong>ed<br />

above <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re are o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> lesser importance<br />

in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> study <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Cuba</str<strong>on</strong>g>n beeetles. Additi<strong>on</strong>al informati<strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>on</strong> past <strong>and</strong> present locati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>and</strong> c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

insect <strong>and</strong> o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r zoological collecti<strong>on</strong>s is in Aguayo<br />

(1950), Alvarez (1958), Chard<strong>on</strong> (1949), Hernández<br />

(1972) <strong>and</strong> Silva (1994). Working reference collecti<strong>on</strong>s<br />

are in various applied research institutes such<br />

as The Forestry Institute in Havana.<br />

The Manuel Barro collecti<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>tains about<br />

2,500 insects <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> which 85% are chrysomelid beetles.<br />

It is held as an historical collecti<strong>on</strong> in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Nati<strong>on</strong>al<br />

Museum <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Natural History, La Havana.<br />

The Romanian <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Cuba</str<strong>on</strong>g>n Academies <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Sciences<br />

sp<strong>on</strong>sored a joint series <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> expediti<strong>on</strong>s to investigate<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> cave, litter, soil, groundwater <strong>and</strong><br />

o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r invertebrate faunas <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Cuba</str<strong>on</strong>g>. The expediti<strong>on</strong>s<br />

were from 9 March to 18 June, l969; 3 November<br />

to 12 December, 1970; <strong>and</strong> 3 February to 4 June,<br />

1973. The results were published in a series <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> four<br />

volumes by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Romanian Academy <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Sciences<br />

(Orghidan et al. 1973, 1977, 1981, 1983), <strong>and</strong> volumes<br />

1 <strong>and</strong> 2 provide lists <strong>and</strong> descripti<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

collecting sites. Several papers are <strong>on</strong> cave <strong>and</strong> n<strong>on</strong>cave<br />

collecti<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> beetles. The cave beetles have<br />

been summarized by Peck et al. (1998). While many<br />

species <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> cave specialized arthropods occur in <str<strong>on</strong>g>Cuba</str<strong>on</strong>g>,<br />

no known cave-specialized species <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> beetles occur<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re. The beetle specimens from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se expediti<strong>on</strong>s<br />

are scattered in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> collecti<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> authors <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

papers describing <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> species or may be in Romania,<br />

at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> “Emile Racovitza” Institute <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Speleology<br />

in Bucharest. Not all collecti<strong>on</strong>s from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se expediti<strong>on</strong>s<br />

have been studied <strong>and</strong> remain in<br />

Bucharest.<br />
