regreso a casa.
no existe.
hicimos a Key West, a Great Stirrup Cay y a Nassau (Bahamas).
Cordiales saludos!
TRANSFORMANDO TRANSFORMANDO RADIO RADIO CANADA CANADA INTERNATIONAL INTERNATIONAL (RCI)
(RCI)
Hubert T. Lacroix, Presidente e CEO.
Brunswick.
Canada: Canada: Radio Radio-Canada Radio Canada towers towers to to be be featured featured in in film
film
A Moncton artist is now working against the clock to film the Radio-Canada International shortwave towers in her latest film
project. Budget cuts at CBC announced last week mean the towers, near Sackville, N.B., will soon be shut down, but it's not
known exactly what will happen to the towers themselves.
Amanda Dawn Christie said she remembers coming and going from Moncton and the towers signifying that she was almost
home. "Whenever I would drive in, I would just be filled with this exhilaration and I don't know if it's the high voltage. Like,
some people get headaches and nauseous; I would get exhilarated," she said. "So I don't know if it was my interest or if it
was the high voltage, but I definitely had this sense of 'wow.'"
She said she's heard similar stories as she's started interviewing people for her feature film.
Christie's been studying the towers for years. She even created a sculpture on the marsh near the towers — a kitchen sink
designed to catch radio waves — a phenomenon often reported by locals.
Now she's collecting stories of people who call the towers their landmark, or a tightrope school because of the wires, or the
connection to Africa or the Arctic.
Christie said she's particularly fond of the sight at dawn and dusk.
"The sky's kind of pink and blue, and the lights are on but you can still see all the towers and the wires. It's very magical,"
she said. "If you don't know what it is, you're filled with wonder. And the thing is, if you do know what it is, you're still filled
with wonder."
Instead of the shortwave towers, RCI will broadcast internationally online.
LU5
Atlántico Sur (hasta Tristan Da Cunha) y se usa para control aereo. Otras frecuencias del grupo son 3479; 8855; 10096;
13297 y 17907.
listan esas frecuencias.
UKRAINE
on April 9, 2012. In 1377 kHz pandemonium. Today for the first time identified the Radio Khvylya from Vinnytsia - the
former frequency 873 kHz. Heard in the evening fairly steadily, listen to the transfer of about Ella Fitzgerald. Noise from
VOR (Gavar) good shall be resolved ferrite antenna. And yesterday, too in the evening there was heard Radio Nikolaev. The
French almost did not interfere. In 1600 began to transfer the call sign of the TWR, and allegedly VOR in Farsi continued
his work. In General, there is something to understand.
(Alexander Egorov, Kyiv, Ukraine / "deneb-radio-dx" & "open_dx")
Strange, Sergey Panasyuk from Vinnitsa in a personal letter announced that the station for nearly a week working on 1377
kHz. (Aleksandr Diadischev, Ukraine / "open_dx")
I also observed this phenomenon of the 5-th of April.
As it turned out - this is the cross-modulation of the transmitter in Gavar. Call sign of the TWR is transmitted from 16:00 to
AC 16:12 utc on 864 kHz. This signal is superimposed on the VOR-Farsi in 1377 kHz. Also, more weakly, this mixture of
signals can be heard on 1359 kHz.
VOR at 1395 kHz is almost clear, but if you listen, you can also hear the call sign of the TWR.
After 16:12 utc music, which is transmitted to 864 kHz, also can be heard on the 1377.
Incorporating REVIEW OF INTERNATIONAL BROADCASTING edited by Glenn Hauser
** ABKHAZIA. /ARMENIA: Radio Republic Abkhazia (``Apsua Radio`` in Russian and Abkhazian) on 1350 kHz was
noted 15 March with news in Abkhazian followed by local songs. It disappeared at 0430 and then V. of Russia via Armenia
was heard in Turkish (with ID and old pop songs in English) until 0500, IS and ID in Russian and close down at 0501.
In the afternoons, Renovira is audible until 1615-1625 (most likely a local FM station in Sukhumi broadcasting only in
Russian and announcing 107.9 MHz, which is listed for Radio Soma in WRTH 2012). No rumbling sound from two
transmitters, if one is on odd frequency (Rumen Pankov, Bulgaria, 17 March, MW Report, April BDXC-UK Communication
via DXLD)
** BELARUS. BR1 is carried on 1170 kHz between 0400-1600 and on 6080 kHz between 1430v-2100 (WRTH Monitor
update 5 April via DXLD)
** BELARUS. 7255, Radio Belarus, 2110-2210, English programming with local pop music. Local folk music. Into listed
Russian at 2200. Audio slightly muffled. Poor to fair. Occasionally mixing with Nigeria, which was intermittently on and off
the air, but off the air most of the time. // 11730 - poor to fair. March 29 (Brian Alexander, PA, dxldyg via WORLD OF
RADIO 1611, DX Listening Digest)
That third frequency, which used to be 7360, has been cancelled at the beginning of this year, at the same time when 7390
became 11730. Tonight this 11730 is on air as usual, i.e. pretty undermodulated, and the second remaining transmitter is on
7255 where it suffers severe adjacent channel interference from stronger Santa Maria di Galeria on 7250.
And not only Radio Belarus is missing on 1170, the transmitter was also off before 1900 when Voice of Russia used to be
carried (with Russian 1700-1900). Has it been shut down altogether? (Kai Ludwig, Germany, Apr 1, dxldyg via DX
LISTENING DIGEST)
** KAZAKHSTAN. (or IS it??) 11510, Family Radio *1357-1456* 20/21 March. Aoki has this 14-15 in Urdu via Almaty,
but info from DXLD says that site closed as of 1 March (did anyone tell the techs in Almaty?) Anyway, opens with OC,
'YFR trumpet IS, yak in (presumed) Urdu with frequent Family Radio mentions, into (again, presumed) Bible reading /
devotional yak, Family Radio website info at :37, closes with classical piano selection :52-:55, announcement by M and very
quick blip (3-6 sec.) of trumpet IS. Signal usually improves over time from poor to fair, and Family Radio in English via Hu
Wei, Taiwan on 11540 is usually weaker during same monitoring period (Dan Sheedy, CA, G5/Xwire at Moonlight Beach
via Bob Wilkner, Cumbre DX via DXLD)
** KURDISTAN [non]. UKRAINE or KURDISTAN (non), take your pick, it's all good. 11530, Denge Mezopotamya
(Mykolaiv) 1440-1500+ 20 March phone reports, news, occasional music breaks, fanfare & nice "Denge Mezopotamya" ID
by W at :46, more Kurdish chat with another f/f across TOH. Usually fair-good reception from these folks most mornings at
the beach (Dan Sheedy, CA, G5/Xwire at Moonlight Beach via Bob Wilkner, Cumbre DX via DXLD)
** PRIDNESTROVYE. MOLDOVA. Radio PMR, observed 25 March, first day of A12, on new 9665, English 2130;
probably also M-F 1730 & 1930 (Dave Kenny, DX News, April BDXC-UK Communication via DXLD)
The 2130 broadcast is probably UT Sun-Thu since for ``M-F`` it`s after local midnite, at UT+3 DST instead of UT+2 ST as
per http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/clockchange.html?n=177&year=2012 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING
O o, below may be one hour off based on wrong assumptions of timezone (which ought not to make ANY difference for
external broadcasts!)(gh)
Updating my log of Radio PMR - Pridnestrovye on 25 March when I Heard English at 2130 on 9665 kHz. That was on the
first day of the A12 season, but on subsequent checks here this week English has been heard on 9665 at 1830, 2030 and 2230
(i.e. same time as it was during the B11 period). The 1830 and 2030 transmissions are most likely Mon-Fri, whereas 2230 is
probably Sun-Thurs. 73s (Dave Kenny (DX News editor - BDXC-UK), dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST)
So this once again brings up What Time Is It in Moldova/Pridnestrovye? As cited above, timeanddate.com based on Tiraspol
says there was a change from UT +2 to UT +3, but SW scheduling indicates there was no change, as far as Radio PMR is
concerned, siding with the Russians who also made no change (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** RUSSIA. 4831, 2010-2020 28.03, Voice of Russia, Tbiliskaya - Mixing product (5920 - 1089 = 4831). Russian talk with
** RUSSIA [and non]. Voice of Russia A12 English Schedule http://english.ruvr.ru/engradio/ I have not seen this 'posted'
elsewhere, except on VOR Site (Ken Fletcher, P[ostal]-Code CH43, March 29 BDXC-UK yg via DXLD)
Transmission schedule in English by target area. 9800 and 9665 are duplicated both for North and Latin America at 22-02
and 23-02 respectively, but at 02-04, 9665 is for Latin America only, despite HFCC registrations showing 9665 on exactly
the same 309 degree antenna for the entire span, 23-04, so who are they kidding? Merging all the Western Hemisphere
frequencies, North and Latin America, this is all we get! O, for the good old days of 20 R. Moscow frequencies at once!
22-02 9800
23-04 9665
02-04 15425
04-06 13775
This does not mean different frequencies, same sites after 0200 and 0400 UT changes: 9800 and 9665 are from Europe,
15425 and 13775 from Pet/Kam, DVR (Far East Russia), 65 and 61 degrees (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1611,
9665, April 3 at 0016, V. of Russia in English to N America has co-channel QRM with audio and making a fast SAH. The
** SOUTH CAROLINA [non]. The Overcomer Ministry is no longer extending the IRRS relay via ROMANIA 15190, an
extra two hours Saturday only after 1500 for the live Sabbath service until 1700. Nothing there March 31 at 1506, tho it had
been on earlier, such as at 1318. That means 15190 is also open for R. Africa, Equatorial Guinea [q.v.] should it come back
on the air as early as 1500, (1515 or 1530 as below).
The latest HFCC as of March 30 no longer shows the Sat 15-17 broadcast from MIL either, altho still at 13-15, in ``Arabic``!
As well as Fri 1500-1515 and Sun 1500-1530 (the latter axually Santec in English). Instead: 15700 Saturdays only at 15-17
in ``Arabic``. I did not run across Brother Scare there altho at the time I was not aware of that scheduling.
What does the IRRS/NEXUS-IBA/EGR site say? The Saturday schedule as of 25 March now does show 15700 at 15-17
after 15190 at 13-15 UT.
DX Mix News also picked this up and thinx the site is probably
Asociación Diexman Uruguay ~ 39 ~ Boletin Nº 42
ARMENIA. Also shows Armenia on 15650 for a daily TOM broadcast at 12-14. Remembering this frequency, I was
checking 15650 after 1500 which already has V. of Greece colliding with R. Liberty in Turkmen. At 1507 I could almost
think there was a third station in the mix with the urgent intonations of Brother Scare, like on 15420, 9980 and 9385, but
of course none would be synchronized for a definite match.
What does the TOM homepage say now March 31? possibly pertinent:
``MidEast 11590 15-17:00 UTC Daily
Africa 15750 7-10:00 UTC Saturday-FREE!
FAR EAST 15190 13-15:00 UTC Daily
Satudays [sic] 15700 15-17:00 UTC ****
AFRICA 17580 15-16:00 UTC Daily
FarEast 15650 12-14:00 UTC Daily``
Don`t even look at their ftp shortwave schedule download, which is further out of date without these, but with WBCQ still
on 7415, etc.
15190, Sunday April 1 at 1402, Brother Scare is still audible here via IRRS via ROMANIA.
15650, April 2 at 1359 fast SAH between two transmitters, 1400 Voice of Greece IS, and presumably R. Liberty, Germany
in Turkmen. But at 1401 I am just about sure there is a very weak third understation, with ramshorn call, The Overcomer
Ministry mentioned, intonations of Brother Scare, not // or at least not synchro with 9385 WWRB. 1402 ID from IFTH,
Greece.
Then at 1404 I check 15190, Brother Scare via IRRS via ROMANIA, which was certainly there before 1400, but now just a
dead carrier, or JBM, or atop some other JBA station, Eq. Guinea? 1408 some keyboard music fill has started, 1409 rejoining
BS, which I time as 49 seconds behind WWRB. So 15650 is not a frequency change from the 15190 service, but something
additional.
On March 29, Wolfgang Büschel measured Greece 15 Hz high, which would account for the ``fast SAH``, and at 1359 it
``covered a religious prayer underneath on approx 15650.0 totally, midst on the station announcement in Greek started at
CRASH character at 1401:07 UT``. One would think the ``religious prayer`` was not from R. Liberty, especially if it was in
English?
Ivo Ivanov, DX Re Mix News, Bulgaria, reported March 28: ``ARMENIA/USA, Test transmissions of Brother Stair TOM in
English: Daily 1202-1402 15650#ERV 300 kW / 125 deg SEAs from March 20 and continued --- # from 1350 strong cochannel
** TAJIKISTAN. 11500, March 29 at 1335 poor talk with hum, flutter, instead of Firedrake often found here. HFCC A-12
shows V of Russia is now registered via Dushanbe at 10-15, 500 kW, 155 degrees to S Asia. Aoki shows it at 12-15 only,
English-Hindi-English, while Sound of Hope 100-watt nuisance transmitter in Taiwan could be here at any hour; maybe
VOR will dissuade them from a few.
Asociación Diexman Uruguay ~ 40 ~ Boletin Nº 42
11500, March 31 at 1249, just a big hum from the Dushanbé relay of VOR`s English to S Asia, which had been funxional
earlier this week. That`s more like it! Thruout the A-11 season, this transmission often failed, and it seems A-12 will be no
different. Is no one paying attention in Moscow or Orzu? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
"Radio censorship" http://www.e-reading.org.ua/book.php?book=1003800
In this work the author - Rimantas Pleykis (the former Minister of communications of Lithuania in 1996-1998) considers in
detail Radio censorship. Without exaggeration, this article, written in 2002-2003, closes another "white spot" in the
confrontation between the two military-political blocs, and reveals the technology of radio censorship (MichaelLevin, Saint-
GEORGIA [ABKHAZIA] ARMENIA 1350 Radio Republic Abkhazia ("Apsua Radio" in Russian and Abkhazian) on 1350
broadcasting only in Russian and announcing 107.9 MHz, which is listed for Radio Soma in WRTH 2012). No rumbling
sound from two transmitters, if one is on odd frequency. (Rumen Pankov-BUL, 17 March, MW Report, April BrDXC-UK
I got a message from Radio Soma, Soukhumi that they are on FM 107.9 and on 101.9 is Radio Rio-Ritha. But from March
31st in times between 1500 and 1700 UT it was replaced by Avtoradio Soukhumi, which is known from 9535 kHz. In Apr 1-
on Apr 3 till 1625 UT) till 1657 UT.
By the way Mauno Rithola is absoluty rirght - the tx in Abkhazia is on odd freq cause at 1655 UT when is its s/on the strong
rumbling sound there is. At 1700 is IS of Apsua Radio and nx in Abkhazian usually until cl/d at 1720 UT. On Mar 30 on
** RUSSIA [non]. PARIS-BASED "VOICE OF ORTHODOXY" DISCONTINUES BROADCASTS ON SW
Here is an extract from VOO's letter to Vladimir Pivovarov (Ukraine), which he has quoted in deneb-radio-dx googlegroups:
"Thank you for your message. Indeed, the transmitter site in Kazakhstan was closed without any preliminary notice so we
have to cancel our agreement with them [their broker; Radio Agency-M (RAM in HFCC)]. It will be very difficult for us to
resume broadcasts on short wave due to the slash in our budget".
My five cents. It seems that Radio Agency M is a very unreliable organization. In February and March, for some reason, they
aired only few VOO's broadcasts and the station has learnt about it only from its listeners.
I have only positive feelings towards the Voice of Orthodoxy. The station was founded in Paris in 1979 by Orthodox
volunteers, descendants of "emigrés", who left Russia at the revolution of 1917. Despite very limited budget and staff, they
have broadcast on short wave for more than 30 years (initially via Portugal, then via Lebanon and Germany).
Notably, VOO always used to accurately verify reception reports.
VOO still has a studio in St. Petersburg (Russia) and some air time on local station there (Radio Grad Petrov, 73.1 MHz).
(Aleksandr Diadischev, Ukraine, April 6, dxldyg via WORLD OF RADIO 1612, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
Was it really them or wasn't it rather Kazteleradio, the transmitter operator who may not have cared anymore, intending to
get rid of the shortwave stuff anyway? In the old days it all was just ministry of communications of the USSR, with a chain
of command down from Moscow, but this constellation of course has changed substantially since.
What I find remarkable is how the vast majority of these "Moscow" placements are on facilities of operators elsewhere in the
FSU. Very few transmissions for other broadcasting organizations than Voice of Russia are left on the RTRS facilities in
Russia, as an example none at all at the huge Tbilisskaya plant (a.k.a. Krasnodar or Armavir) if I do not overlook something.
This although "they" (what was once being referred to as "Titov", i.e. the deceased Anatoly Titov) would not have to deal
with foreign organizations in this case. Any explanations for this situation? (Kai Ludwig, Germany, ibid.)
There is still DW at 1430-1500 UT on 13630 kHz (Tbilisskaya, 250 kW,110 ).
I think it's Radio Agency M because irregular transmissions of VOO
Asociación Diexman Uruguay ~ 48 ~ Boletin Nº 42
took place in February (via Kazakhstan's "A-A" site) as well as in March (probably via Gavar, Armenia). Moreover, VOO
wasn't informed about numerous retimings of their broadcasts and the closure of A-A. Given all above, VOO has decided to
cancel their agreement with Radio Agency M for such bad service (Aleksandr Diadischev, Ukraine, ibid.)
** UKRAINE. THE CABINET OF MINISTERS OF UKRAINE OFFERED TO RESUME THE BROADCASTING OF
THE LW
People's Deputy Yuri Karmazin (NUNS) offers the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine to develop and approve the program of
preservation and restoration of the state enterprise "radio transmitting center", as well as to restore order on the transfer of
the enterprise strength. This follows from the draft of the Resolution "On ensuring information security of Ukraine and the
adoption of measures on the state support of the state enterprise "radio transmitting center", text of which has "proIT".
The draft resolution also proposes funds for the resumption of the work of the transmitter with a capacity of 500 kW on the
frequency 0,207 MHz [207 kHz - LW] to the distribution of air time between the National radio company of Ukraine
(NRCU) for the translation of the 1st programme of the National radio and television and radio company "RADA" for the
broadcasting of the sessions of the meetings of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
In addition the resolution offers to solve a question of the subordination of the state enterprise "radio transmitting center" the
Apparatus of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.(from http://proit.com.ua 30.03.2012 , sent Sergey Sosedkin)
Comment Alexandra Egorova [genitive, not feminine] from Kiev about the prospects for the resumption of LW-broadcasting
of the Ukrainian radio:
About the resumption of broadcasts by 207 kHz, indeed, in the NRCU again stirred on this topic. Are interested in a glaring
example of the long-wave broadcasting abroad. I have them sent to the site EMWG. Nostalgic letters from listeners on 207
kHz is also obvious help - I, too, have shipped in the national radio company of Ukraine. But I doubt that the Verkhovna
Rada will help. The deputies of the state broadcasting there is no problem - it and is not necessary, except that if the
absolutely to stop live broadcasts from the session of the Verkhovna Rada on UR1. But this is more exciting opposition, and
the majority of Parliament these broadcasts in my opinion only harm their image.
In fact there is some kind of fever in the NRCU in this issue: we RFE do not respect, and go to the MW, and the MW cast
out, and ??????????? old already, almost without lamp transmitter in LW. Though the meaning of this some is"coming
elections to the Parliament, so something can be squeezed out on the topic of the necessity of modulation brainwashing the
electorate. Now in rural areas almost wired radio has not and old yet available "Spodola" and others., which take LW/MW,
almost the whole of Western and Central Ukraine silent - no gear ur in these regions.
I don't really hope for the resumption of broadcasting by 207 kHz to 500 kW - very big Finance is required. At least 250 kW
pulled. Better yet resumed would broadcast UR1 on the square on the 5970 kHz, which I myself and chose at the time -
would have been the day the whole Ukraine and destinations for 100 or even 50 kW boldly. Receivers with a SW and lowcost
in the market enough - the more-or you can listen to. The transmitter is the 5970 kHz with my agitation bosses worked
from September 2008 to February 2010. But the scornful refers to the SW, because they are the same, the quality of
reception of them does not satisfy, and the fact that for the reception of information programs, it is important not only the
quality, as the number of received information, for which SW very suitable and there is less domestic and industrial
interference that's not a think. But what is interesting is that all of the same brigade RRT at the conference HFCC is present
regularly and even every time the year the same frequency on the SW reserve, including 5970 (Sent Sergey Sosedkin,
Capsula Capsula Clementina Clementina II, II, II, recuperada recuperada intacta intacta intacta en en Cord Cordoba Cord oba
Estimados colegas:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xh9oFApioJI
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=leGzGxUzOTw
* The 100th Anniversary of the Sinking of the Titanic: The Wireless Story - 01:01
It was exactly 100 years ago last Wednesday April 14 that the passenger liner “Titanic” struck an iceberg in the north
Atlantic, and less than three hours later she sank to her doom in the deep ocean waters. This tragic event is listed in the
annals of history as the worst single loss of life in any civilian maritime disaster, with more than 1500 people perishing on
this catastrophic occasion.
The “Titanic” was laid down on March 31, 1909 at the shipyards of Harland & Wolff in Belfast, Ireland, as the world’s
largest passenger ship. She was 882½ feet long, just a few inches longer than her sister ship, the “Britannic”, and she was
92½ feet wide, with a displacement weight of more than 46,000 tons. This mighty ship was launched without the traditional
christening ceremony two years later, on May 11, 1911.
* “Titanic” Music
A little less than another year later, the brand new, shiny bright “Titanic” was ready to make her maiden voyage across
the Atlantic, from England to the United States. Labeled as absolutely unsinkable, the “Titanic” sailed triumphantly out of
the major British port of Southampton on the first stage of her initial journey, with stops at Cherbourg in France 90 minutes
later, and Queenstown in Ireland the next day.
You know the story, you have heard it before. Three days later, the mighty “Titanic” hit a super large iceberg; that was
at 11:40 pm, and 2¾ hours later, she was at the bottom of the Atlantic, broken into two separate pieces at a depth of more
than two miles down.
Just before her original shakedown cruise, the “Titanic” was loaded with a complete set of the latest versions of
wireless and radio equipment. There were two spark wireless communication transmitters and two receivers.
The main transmitter was rated at 5 kW output into a 4 wire T type center fed antenna that was suspended between two
masts at a level of 250 feet above the sea. The natural resonant wavelength of the antenna was 162.5 metres or 325 metres,
though the tuning circuits gave a radiant frequency of 300 kHz or 500 kHz, in what we would call today the standard
longwave band. Electrical power for this main transmitter was taken from the ship’s electrical circuits.
Asociación Diexman Uruguay ~ 55 ~ Boletin Nº 42
The signal from the main transmitter was guaranteed for 250 miles, though during the shakedown cruise, it was
discovered that the signal could be heard at 400 miles during the day, and 2,000 miles at night.
There was also an emergency transmitter with power taken from a set of batteries. There was one regular detector
crystal wireless receiver, and also one of the very latest valve/tube type radio receivers.
Due to the boomingly noisy signal from a hefty spark transmitter, this equipment was installed
into a heavily padded room next to the operating room. This transmitter room was named, rather appropriately in the
understated terminology of the era, as the “Silent Room”.
The original callsign allocated to the “Titanic” in January 1912, was MUC, though shortly afterwards, this was
changed to the now more familiar MGY. In those days, the initial letter M identified the ship’s wireless operators as
representing the Marconi company in England, though these days the letter M identifies a radio station belonging to Great
Britain.
During the initial leg of the voyage across the Atlantic, the two wireless operators, John Phillips & Harold Bride,
worked consistently to process incoming and outgoing signals in the Continental version of Morse Code. This wireless
traffic was made up of normal routine messages for the navigation of the world’s proudest passenger liner across a wide
oceanic expanse, as well as expensive though generally unnecessary messages from wealthy passengers to relatives, friends
and business associates. Among the incoming messages were at least a couple from other ships warning of icebergs in the
main shipping lanes.
At 11:40 pm local time on Sunday April 14, 1912, the “Titanic” hit the supersized, irregularly shaped iceberg that
rendered her doom. Some passengers described the sound as like the continuous tearing of a sheet of calico, though the
entire impact caused no more than a slight shudder as the vessel reacted to the collision.
However, the damage to the underwater section of the hull was so great that tons of water instantaneously surged into
the stricken vessel. An immediate inspection of the damage in the lower decks revealed very quickly that the unsinkable
“Titanic” was indeed sinking.
The elderly and highly experienced Captain Edward J. Smith gave orders to the two wireless operators to send out a
distress signal indicating that the ship was doomed. At 12:15 am on Monday morning, Phillips tapped out the message,
“CQD de MGY” six times, giving also the geographic coordinates for the “Titanic” at the time. He continued with the
additional information that the “Titanic” was indeed sinking, and he asked for the assistance of any ships that were nearby.
* Spark Gap Morse Code
Meanwhile Bride manned the receiver and he heard the first response from the first ship that replied, the German
vessel “Frankfurt” with the callsign DFT; and quite quickly, many other ships also responded. However, the nearest was the
“Carpathia” MPA, 58 miles away, and it would take some four hours to arrive at the scene, a duration that would be too late
to save a large number of the passengers and crew from the “Titanic”.
The two wireless operators continued at their task of alerting Atlantic shipping and also the shore stations in
Newfoundland (Cape Race MCE) and the United States (Cape Cod MCC) of the progressively disastrous fate of the
“Titanic”. They also updated the exact geographic location of the ailing “Titanic”.
Asociación Diexman Uruguay ~ 56 ~ Boletin Nº 42
At this stage, Bride made the suggestion to Phillips that he should also send the new distress
signal, SOS, in addition to the Marconi distress signal, CQD. It might be his only opportunity to send SOS, he stated,
somewhat humorously. Bride was correct with his statement; Phillips died in the frigid Atlantic waters along with so many
others, an hour or two later.
The SOS call from the “Titanic” was one of the very earliest usages of this distress signal, but not the first. It is known
that the “Slavonia” issued an SOS distress call three years earlier, on June 10, 1909.
As we know today, the only ship to arrive in time to pick up living survivors was the “Carpathia” which arrived nearly
two hours after the “Titanic” was gone. The “Carpathia” rescued the shivering occupants from 20 life boats, more than 700
people, and then the heavily laden ship turned around and went back to New York with its living cargo, far in excess of its
planned passenger load.
Several other ships also combed the disaster zone, including the “Californian”, which turned around and returned to the
area; the cable ship “MacKay-Bennett” from Canada; and two American navy vessels sent out by President Taft, the
“Salem” and the “Chester”.
Over in England at the time of the original distress signals from the “Titanic”, amateur wireless operator Arthur Moore
in Gelligroes Mill heard the “CQD de MGY” and subsequent messages. He reported the sinking of the “Titanic” to the local
police, but they scoffed at his information.
That all happened exactly 100 years ago, last week.
* The Titanic Tragedy: The Flow of Wireless Communication from the Other Ships - 10:50
We continue in our story of wireless and radio in association with the rapid and tragic sinking of the invincible
“Titanic”, and this time we look at the flow of wireless messages from other shipping in the area at the time.
According to the historians, a total of 28 ships made some form of communication with the “Titanic” during the two
hour period in which the tragedy played out. All the ships were in midAtlantic, and traveling either west or east, but
generally south of the “Titanic” iceberg zone.
The German cargo vessel “Frankfurt” DFT was the first ship to respond to the CQD distress call from the “Titanic” but
it was too far away and thus unable to render service. The closest ship, it is thought, was the “Californian” MWL, which had
stopped over night in the ice floe in order to avoid a disastrous impact.
However, the Marconi operator at the wireless equipment MWL was not on duty at the time of the distress call from
the “Titanic”, and his ship was unaware of the tragic event happening so near to them, until daylight next morning. To their
credit, it is stated that they returned to the disaster zone, but it was too late to be of any real value.
Asociación Diexman Uruguay ~ 57 ~ Boletin Nº 42
Other ships that responded quite quickly were the Russian cargo steamer, “Birma” with callsign SBA; the Canadian
Pacific cargo vessel “Mount Temple” MLQ; the White Star line sister ship “Olympic” MKC; and another White Star line
vessel, the “Baltic” MBC.
* Titanic: To the Sea
Much of the Morse Code traffic buzzing across the Atlantic at this stage focused upon the events associated with the
“Titanic”. The first distress signal from the “Titanic” ,“CQD de MGY”, went out at 0015 hours local time. This signal drew
attention to the disastrous “Titanic” situation, and many other ships responded with offers of assistance and with enquiries as
to what was happening.
It should be remembered that all ships at the time were communicating in Morse Code, most in the newer Continental
version, though there were still some using the original Morse-Vail version. In addition, the coverage area of the ship
longwave transmitters was not always that great, and it was the custom for one shipboard wireless operator to relay messages
on behalf of other ships as needed, and sometimes on behalf of shore based stations.
* Spark Gap Morse Code
However, it was the “Carpathia” with callsign MPA that played the heroic role of rescuer in the “Titanic” tragedy. At
the time of the original CQD distress signal from the “Titanic”, the Cunard liner “Carpathia” was the closest ship, some 60
miles distant from the scene of the tragedy. Under quick orders from Captain Arthur Rostron, she made rapid headway to
the “Titanic” arriving a while before daylight, some two hours after the “Titanic” had slipped into the murky depths of the
freezingly cold Atlantic.
The “Carpathia” reported by Morse Code that she had picked up 20 boatloads of survivors, including some who were
still in the water. It was just 8 hours from the 1 st CQD from the “Titanic” until the last survivor was picked up out of the
water. These rescued crewmen and passengers were given every available amenity on the rescue ship, including food &
drink, clothing, and somewhere to sleep, though few empty cabins were available.
Among the rescued personnel from the “Titanic” was wireless operator Harold Bride, and though suffering from water
exposure and injury, he assisted the regular wireless operator aboard the “Carpathia”, Harold Cottam, with the transmission
and reception of multitudinous wireless messages, communicating with other ships, and with the shore stations in North
America. Much of the traffic in Morse Code at this stage was the listing of survivors from the “Titanic” for the benefit of
family & relatives, though the major newspapers were pressing for details of the tragic events.
And as we mentioned earlier in this program, all of these things happened exactly 100 years ago, last week.
