At the Playground
1 Lucía and María raced to see who could get to the swings first. All day they had
been competing to discover who could swing the highest.
2 “Hey girls, watch this,” shouted Julio. He climbed to the top of the monkey bars
and showed them how he could swing holding on with his legs.
3 Vicente sat at the top of the slide and watched. He had only been at this school for
a week and knew very few classmates. It was clear that Lucía and María were best
friends, and Julio was always getting everyone’s attention. I just don’t know where I fit in,
thought Vicente.
4 “Hey, Vicente, want to play touch and run after I win this race?” shouted Lucía as
she swung up into the air.
5 “Who says you are going to win?” shouted María, making her legs push harder.
Vicente laughed and walked over to the swings. Vicente was a very fast runner and loved
to play touch and run.
Time to Score
1 Julia sat on her bed and tied her shoelaces. She took a deep breath. After two days
of practicing, she was about to play her first basketball game. She hoped she would
remember everything she had learned at school and at basketball camp. She did not want
to disappoint her team.
2 “Julia, are you almost ready?” shouted Mr. Hernández from the hall. “It’s time to
go. You can’t be late for your very first game.”
3 “Yes, Dad,” she yelled back. She took one more look in the mirror and smiled. Her
new team shirt had her last name on the back and her number, 15, on both sides. With her
bright white socks and her brand new shoes, she certainly looked like a basketball player!
Now, if her team scores more points than the other team, she might come back home with
her first victory!
