PyROfLux 2, 4, 5, 6, 6535
POwDER COvERINg AND REfININg fLux
These Pyroflux formulations are a light grey powder blend of KCl and anhydrous
MgCl 2 produced as a cover and refining flux for in-furnace metal treatment.
(NOTE: the 6535 blend works best as a refining flux vs a cover flux.)
Pyroflux melts on the surface of the metal bath where the temperature is over
the melting point of the blend. As it melts it forms a liquid and continuous film
that efficiently prevents the aluminium and alloying elements from reacting
with humidity and generating hydrogen pick-up and oxides accordingly. Once
the Pyroflux becomes liquid it can be stirred into the melt to remove alkalis
such as Na, Li and Ca as well as non-metallic inclusions.
ApplicAtion
NOTE: Recommended ranges for the application of Pyroflux are provided below.
Exact requirements will depend on the initial and targeted levels of inclusions
including hydrogen, sodium, lithium and calcium. Shop-specific application
rates are developed through experience.
Application of Pyroflux 2, 4, 5, 6
1. To cover the metal bath and to prevent hydrogen pick-up and metal losses,
add approximately 1–2 kg of Pyroflux for each metric ton of aluminium to
the clean surface of the bath after alloying and skimming the surface.
2. Once the Pyroflux becomes liquid it can be stirred into the melt to remove
alkalis such as Na, Li and Ca, as well as non-metallic inclusions.
Application of Pyroflux 6535
1. To remove alkali metals and non-metallic inclusions from molten aluminium
in the melting or holding furnaces, add between 0.5–5 kg for each metric
ton of aluminium in the solid charge or on the heel just before adding the
liquid charge.
