Freedom and Responsibility.
Hopefully our nation is about to begin a serious discussion about the place of firearms in our lives and in our society. I
am not going to tell you, and should not, where to stand on the issue. No, what I want to address is the whole area of personal
freedom and the rights of others and of society as a whole, and our freedom vis-à-vis God.
The only totally free being is God. For creatures there is no such thing as absolute freedom. There are some things which
are obvious – I can’t defy the law of gravity and expect to get away with it. Ok, you can say I could use a plane. But
what happens when the fuel runs out! The whole idea of society is based on the notion that the individual must surrender
some rights in order to gain others - to enjoy a better life, to have access to education, to have a safe trip on the roads, to
be able to work where I please, to worship the way I choose to and so on.
If everyone were to insist solely on their rights and have no regard for those of others, the result would be chaos! Perhaps
one of the most glaring examples of this is when we consider the subject of abortion. A woman (or a couple for that matter)
may say ‘this is my body and I can do what I like with it.’ But is that true? The baby is the fruit/result of the
woman’s (and to some extent the man’s) body. But he or she is a separate individual, a separate person with their own
rights, the first of which is the right to exist, the right to live.
Another example is when parents say, as some do, “Oh, we don’t teach our children about our religion. We want them to
make up their own minds when they are old enough.” Sounds reasonable, no? But how are they supposed to make that
decision if they don’t have any information on which to base their decision? We wouldn’t say, “I don’t teach my child to
read, he can decide when he’s old enough if he wants to learn!” Whether or not he opens a book as an adult at least he
now has a choice! The parents and the State have restricted the child’s freedom, ‘forced’ him to do something he may not
want to do, in order to give him the possibility of greater freedom.
God gives us freedom and longs for us to use it to develop into beings who enjoy ever greater freedom. St. Paul says that
the ‘creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of
God.’ (Rom. 8.21) We are becoming more aware of the way that creation is constantly changing – the concepts of plate
tectonics brought about by earthquakes and volcanoes. If God had made a totally static earth, then there would be nothing
on it. Everything has evolved in response to the constantly changing surroundings.
An image I like is God saying to the dust, “Come on, you can do better;”and it becomes plants. Then He says to the
plants, “Come on, you can do better;” and they become animals. Then He says to the animals, “Come on, you can do better;”
and mankind emerges. Now He says to US, “Come on, you can do better.”
And what will we become? Through Baptism into Christ we become the sons and daughters of God, sharing His very life.
If we insist on our narrow ‘freedom’ to reject God’s call, then we don’t grow, we fail to become what we could be.
In all the debates about how we organize our lives, we must always consider what we want and deserve – that’s part of
being a rational being. But we must also consider the needs of others. As God’s beloved children we are called to go
beyond ourselves and share our freedom with those around us.
Just like a parent grabs a child who falls when learning to walk, God is always there to pick us up and dust us off, but just
like the human parent, He never ceases to encourage and call and empower us to be more, do more and love more – just
like He does.
Fr. Robert.
Lord, give me a new heart.
The Little girl watched with astonished eyes the sculptor drawing out a winged horse from a huge block of wood. She was
so astonished that in her innocence she asked a question which remained unanswered: how did that clever man know that
there was such a beautiful horse hidden in the block of wood?
The word ‘educate’ comes to us from the Latin “educere” which means to ‘draw out.’ We educate people, communities,
nations and the entire world. We need to educate humanity so that they may discover the amazing calling they have received.
We need to ‘draw out’ from the heart of each individual the ‘winged horse’ of respect, love, truth, peace, employment,
generosity and commitment.
God draws all sorts of lines in each person and through them creates the sublime composition of His image in every man
and woman of every age and place so that His glory may be made manifest throughout the world.
And what have we done? Many of us have rejected the incredible goodness of our Creator and chosen to take on ourselves
the image of the world, binding ourselves with the chains of selfishness, fear, sin and error.
Maybe even today we are that block of wood that has the potential to be a ‘winged horse’ varied in its sheen and the
range of its virtues. Now is the moment, through education, prayer and a continual conversion to begin the search for
what God has placed in us with the spark of life.
Fr. Frank.

The Polk County Health Department Clinic in
Haines City (1700 Baker Avenue E. Haines City, FL
33844) was reopened on December 3, 2012. The services
that are provided at this time are Healthy Start,
HIV testing, Immunizations, Prenatal / maternity care,
and Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) screening and
treatment. As of end of December the clinic has not
started providing primary care yet. Our understanding
is that the Health Department was still actively seeking
to hire a primary care physician .
Our budget for this year, 2012/2013 is based on the assumption
that our total income will rise from $613K to
$615K. This is a rise of 0.5% - that’s half of one percent,
or half a cent on the dollar! Please help us to make this
a reality – don’t assume everyone else will take care of
it. As always, thank you for your continued generosity
to God and our Parish. - Fr. Robert
SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY
You may think the poor are “someone else.” Or that the poor are
people who “lack sufficient motivation or who could improve
their circumstances if they wanted to, if they tried.” It’s easy to
think that….until you look at the facts:
Sometime in their lives, half of all Americans will experience poverty.
The poor do work…but they don’t make enough money. In 2010,
7.2% of the labor force was not earning enough to stay out of poverty.
The number of Americans who are one emergency away from a
financial crisis has climbed to nearly 50%.
Nearly one in every two Americans is classified as either lowincome
or earning below the poverty line. Half of Americans are
low-income. - Taken from Western Region View, a publication
of Catholic Charities of Central Florida, Fall 2012
At St. Vincent de Paul, we see these poor Americans and those
from other nationalities who cannot feed themselves of their families.
Página 6 20 de Enero 2013
Libertad y responsabilidad.
gravedad y esperar salir a salvo!
Suena razonable, ¿no?
No podrían decir: "Yo no enseño a mi hijo a
No salía
