WVIAC Announces Women’s Soccer Accolades
PRINCETON, W. Va. – The WVIAC women’s soccer coaches have awarded the 2012 top honors to
Charleston midfielder Elyse Surbaugh, Davis & Elkins forward Taylor Morton and West Virginia
Wesleyan’s Patrick Holguin. Surbaugh is the conference’s Player of the Year while Morton is the
Freshman of the Year. Holguin was named the Coach of the Year after guiding the Bobcats to the WVIAC
Surbaugh controlled the match from her position, pushing forward when needed and playing splendid
defense as well. Surbaugh guided UC to a 5‐3‐2 conference record. She tied for fifth in the WVIAC in
points and was tied for seventh in goals.
Morton, a native of Huntingtown, Md., led the Senators to their best start in school history with seven
wins to open the campaign. She finished second in the WVIAC in points (24) with nine goals and six
assists. Morton was also second in the league in points per game (1.41), goals (nine), goals per game
(0.53), assists (6) and assists per game (0.35). Morton helped D&E to an 11‐4‐2 mark and a 5‐3‐2
campaign against WVIAC foes.
Holguin led the Bobcats to the 2012 NCAA Tournament with an 11‐5‐3 record and a 7‐2‐1 mark in
conference play. He guided the squad to the No. 2 seed in the WVIAC Tournament.
The Battlers’ Megan Johnson, Kate Laird, Nicole Lehamn and Olivia Augustine are repeat first‐team
