4.1 Existing Requirements
4.1.1 Urban Water Requirements of the Greater Bloemfontein Area
Bulk water consumption data (2006 to 2009) provided by Bloem Water (BW) and MMM is summarised in
Table 4.1. Groundwater is utilised by some of the smaller towns to augment water supply. The abstraction
of groundwater for bulk water supply has not been included in Table 4.1.

Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality purchases approximately two thirds of its potable water form Bloem
Water. Table 4.1 shows the amount of bulk water which was supplied from the Bloem Water System and
from MMM’s own sources for the period 2008 through to 2011. From Table 4.1 it is evident that the water
supplied to smaller towns accounts for only 4% of the total bulk water consumption.
Figure 4.1 below shows the bulk water supplied from the Greater Bloemfontein System from 1992 through
to 2011. With the exception of the period 1999 through to 2001 and the last two years there has been a
year on year positive growth in water requirement.
