Bears in Night
Game Tonight
The Newark Bears will turn
on their new 440,000 watt light-
ing system for the first time to-
night when they face the Bal-
timore Orioles in Ruppert Sta-
dium. Al Schacht, Clown Prince
of Baseball, will be on hand to
help celebrate the occasion with
his inimitable style of diamond
comedy and the proceedings will
have a musical touch supplied
by the Jersey Ramblers, one of
the state's outstanding barber-
shop quartets.
Funnyman Schacht helped
pitch the Bears to their first
International League champion-
ship in 1913, their only title un-
til the Yankees took over the
club in 1932. He also hurled for
Jersey City and Washington. An
arm Injury ended his active
career with the latter club and
he moved into the Senators' third
base coaching box, where he put
his natural flair for high-jinks
to work and soon became re-
nowned as the game's top
comedian. During the war Al
was one of the nation's most
prolific entertainers of our serv-
icemen In every theatre of ac-
tion.
The pre-game entertainment
is scheduled to start at 8:30.
Following tonight's contest,
the Bears play Baltimore again
tomorrow night at 8:30 and
Saturday afternoon at 2:30.
They then move to Roosevelt
Stadium, Jersey City, to face the
Little Giants in a Sunday dou-
ble-header and a Monday night
game. The Bears' next series at
home will be a four game set with
Syracuse, starting next Friday
night, May 23.
