International School of Design
In January 2012 Georgia was visited by the industrial designer of the century, Automotive Hall of
Fame member, Italian Giorgetto Giugiaro. He was welcomed by Minister of Education and Science of
Georgia Dimitri Shashkin.
During the meeting, Giugiaro and Shashkin decided to establish an International School of Design
at the Georgian Technical University - this would be the only school of the kind in the Caucasian
region, offering professional education opportunities to talented students. The meeting was attended by
famous Georgian industrial designer Zviad Tsikolia - initiator and coordinator of this project from the
Georgian side.
International School of Design will be established under the patronage of designer Giorgetto Giugiaro.
Its teachers will be successful Georgian specialists with international experience and high qualification
and representatives of Giugiaro School - famous Italian designers. The initiative, implemented under
the Presidential Programme and with the support of Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia, will
contribute to attracting of international teachers to Georgian higher education establishments and fostering
of cooperation with foreign industrial and business circles. The leading local state university intending
to invite foreign experts to Georgia will receive one million lari.
In March 2012 Giorgetto Giugiaro visited Georgia once again, this time - together with his
son, also a famous industrial designer Fabrizio Giugiaro, and Doctor Giancarlo Perini. In the
Georgian Technical University, Italian designers and Minister of Education and Science of Georgia
Dimitri Shashkin presented the International School of Design concept to famous
Georgian architects, Ambassador of Italy in Georgia Ms. Federica
Favi as well as French, German, British ambassadors, representatives
of Georgian banking system and other invited
guests.
The new School, complying with 21st century
requirements, will offer bachelor and master degree
study courses in
1. Product (Consumer and Furniture) Design;
2. Industrial Design;
3. Graphic Design;
4. Mobility and Transportation Design.
The school will focus at development of the students' verbal, written
and visual communication skills, which will help them in interaction with their
future colleagues, partners, clients, public and private entities.
The building allocated for the International School of Design is located at the premises of the
Georgian Technical University. The facility is now being reconstructed based on the project, developed
by architect Zurab Titvinidze (together with a group of students from the Institute of Architecture) and
Technical University rector Archil Prangishvili. In September 2012 the International School of Design
will open its doors to the first intake of Georgian and foreign students.
It should be noted that Fabrizio Giugiaro implements project "Green Batumi - 2020" at the Black
Sea coast. Presentation of the project was arranged during the designer's second visit to our country;
Georgian Technical University awarded Fabrizio Giugiaro with a title of doctor honoris causa.
Father and son Giugiaros maintain cooperation with the largest world corporations. Giorgetto Giugiaro
has designed 250 car models for different brands, including Ferrari and Lamborghini. The designer's
250th car design was featured at Geneva International Motor Show
2012. In addition to cars, Giugiaro has designed camera bodies
for Nikon, computer prototypes for Apple and even a new
pasta shape "Marille". As regards Fabrizio
Giugiaro, his most recent works include
the new Juventus F.C. Stadium,
University of Turin campus and
Copenhagen Metro train design.
