Renovated Building
in Akhaltsikhe
Akhaltsikhe recently acquired a new administrative building, which will
house the Governor's administration, Sakrebulo and municipality. According
to the locals, this is not a new building, but reconstructed hull of former
Armenian Surb-Amenaprkich (Holy Savior) church. Construction process
uncovered frescos and khachkars - cross stones on the walls of the church.
The locals report that head of Akhaltsikhe diocese used to live in Surb-
Amenaprkich church and that the residence site contains the tomb of
Archbishop Karapet Bagratuni.
The church was founded in 1883 and remained active until 1953.
When the Russian troops headquartered in Akhaltsikhe, the church was
demolished, and Officers' Club was built on the surviving ruins.
Reconstruction started in 2011, just after the Easter. The renovated
building replicates the former Officers' club.
