The best medicine
Sometimes I think we take ourselves a little too serious, forgetting
to appreciate the lighter side of life. When was the last time you
laughed until your stomach hurt and tears stroll down your face?
I recently experienced a good laughing session with some friends,
completely spontaneous and maybe a little ridiculous, considering
the situation. But I was still smiling sheepishly the next day for all
the funny anecdotes and new inside jokes we shared.
Laughter is also good for your physical health and can be considered
as a mild workout for your body; just imagine how your
tummy feels after a good laughing session. It can also help you
sleep better and cause your brain to release endorphins – the
“happy” hormones.
Skuif bietjie
jou ego opsy as jy in ‘n netelige (en potensieel humoristiese)
situasie is.
Behuising beïndruk in Witzenberg Streek
15 nuwe seisoenale komplekse gebou.
Plaaseienaars het die behuising sonder regeringsondersteuning
Vraghouers van baie swak gehalte
opgerig as noodbehuising omdat
produksie vinniger ontwikkel het
as infrastruktuur.
4 The Farm Worker/Die Plaaswerker April • May 2013
Uitstekende hostel.
We
came a long way!
Box” vraghouers is beter as die oorspronklikes.
Teëls laat die badkamers baie netjies vertoon.
‘n Netjiese nuwe hostel.
brande.
oop vuur of verwarmer.
kinders daaraan trek.
KERSE
• Hanteer brandende kerse soos jy enige ander
oop vuur sal hanteer.
KAAP AGULHAS VERSNEL DIENSLEWERING
S
edert die begin van die jaar het
Kaap Agulhas Munisipaliteit voet in
die hoek gesit om dienslewering in
Kaap Agulhas te verhaas. Dirkie Uysstraat
in Bredasdorp is opgradeer, addisionele
water opgaardamme is in Struisbaai en
Napier gebou; ‘n rioolsuiweringsnetwerk
is in aanbou in Struisbaai en
daar word ook gebou aan ‘n waterpyplyn
tussen Struisbaai en L’Agulhas om die
gebiede se watergehalte te verbeter.
Kaap Agulhas Munisipaliteit is een van
die bes presterende owerhede ten opsigte
van behuising en is tans besig om
168 huise in Bredasdorp te bou, met 50
gedienste erwe. Die huidige Bredasdorp
behuisingsprojek is bykans voltooi, met
die eerste twintig wonings wat net voor
Paasnaweek oorhandig is aan hul nuwe
eienaars. In Waenhuiskrans word daar
ook 13 GAP-huise gebou vir middelinkomste
inwoners, terwyl 67 staatsgesubsidieërde
wonings ook voltooiing
nader met die eerste 24 wat op 23 April
oorhandig is.
6 The Farm Worker/Die Plaaswerker April • May 2013
laagliggende informele deurgangsgebied
te akkommodeer. Die installering van
dienste vir die GAP-behuisingsprojek in
Bredasdorp het ook in aanvang geneem.
Die dood van Anene Booysen in Februarie
vanjaar, het die gemeenskap en land
geruk.
Kaap Agulhas Munisipaliteit bly verbind
tot die verbetering van sy inwoners se
lewensgehalte.
Agulhas vind.
die munisipale programme en hoe
hul daarby kan baatvind, kan die
From adversity to wine advisor
Issued on behalf of the Cape Wine Academy.
In an effort to stimulate employment
within the wine and hospitality industry in
South Africa and to raise the standard of
service within the tourism sector, the Cape
Wine Academy and the Department of
Tourism launched the Level 1 Cape Sommelier
Programme in March 2012.
Two hundred previously-disadvantaged
and unemployed youth between the ages
of 18 and 34 were originally selected from
townships within the Cape and Gauteng
regions, to gain the Wine Advisors – level
1 Cape Sommelier qualification. The
training centres were in Soweto, Tembisa,
Mitchell’s Plain, Gugulethu and Langa.
On graduation day in late February 2013,
in both provinces, the initiative finally
armed 86 very happy graduates from
Gauteng and 68 from the Western Cape
with their well-earned certificates to enter
into hospitality tourism at any sector.
Several of the graduates, officially called
‘Wine Advisors’, have already entered the
workplace contributing to the overall development
of the hospitality tourism sector.
Western Cape learners Handre Saaiman,
Nomtibuzethu “Zethu” Kama and Patience
Mvenga are three of these enthusiastic
students who have benefited from the
programme.
Somerset West resident Handre Saaiman
had been unemployed for 5 months before
finding out about the Cape Wine Academy
Sommelier Level 1 Programme. Handre currently
works alongside his brother Gustav
(both graduates of the programme) at the
Lord Charles Hotel in Somerset West as a
banquet assistant and waiter in the hotel
restaurant. “I fell in love with wine and the
industry; I have more confidence in myself,”
says Handre when asked about the
impact of the sommelier programme on his
life. Handre aspires to one day be a Food
and Beverage Manager for a hotel.
Nomtibuzethu “Zethu” Kama studied her
level 1 Cape Sommelier programme in
Gugulethu after reading about the programme
in a local newspaper. With little
prior knowledge of the wine industry,
Nomtibuzethu enjoyed the wine tasting
module of the training and hopes to one
day work in the wine export sector. After
three years of unemployment, the Level
1 Cape Sommelier programme helped
Nomtibuzethu land a job working for Event
Management Company, espAFRICA.
Patience Mvenga gained employment at
Hollow on the Square following 5 months
of unemployment prior to enrolling in the
Level 1 Cape Sommelier programme,
which she read about in a local newspaper.
In the next five years, she aims to find
work in the hospitality sector on a cruise
ship and believes that the programme has
helped her become a “hard worker and a
good listener”.
Gauteng graduates Rowena Setle, Thalitha
Nong and Evans Mashaba have also benefitted
from the Sommelier programme.
To the right: Handre Saaiman
At the final graduation was (L-R) Prof Jane
Spowart, University of Johannesburg; Marilyn
Cooper, CEO Cape Wine Academy; Hein
Koegelenberg, Chairman of the Cape Wine
Academy Board; Rinah Jonga, Department of
Tourism
Currently employed as a sales rep for Nixan
Wines, Rowena Setle attended her classes
at Risuna primary school in Mofolo Soweto
and did her practical work at Vinimark,
Southern Sun Montecasino Hotel, and
Checkers, Horizon View.
Similarly to Rowena, Thalitha Nong, studied
in Soweto and completed her
practical course component at Nicholsen
Smith, Southern Sun Montecasino Hotel,
and Checkers in Roodeport. She is currently
employed as a receptionist at the Southern
Sun Montecasino Hotel.
Evans Mashaba completed his practical
component of the course at Smollens, The
Palazzo Hotel, Checkers in Emmarentia,
and Tops at Spar. Following his completion
of the programme he found employment
at Simply Asia Restaurant in Southdown,
Centurion.
Says Melinda van Staden, Conference Manager
for Cape Town Hollow on the
Square, “I deeply believe in the Cape Wine
Academy Level 1 Training Programme. Not
only has this programme given a fantastic
opportunity to the young and talented
South-African youth, it has also enriched
and enhanced the standard level of the
South African Hospitality industry. The
Cape Wine Academy students have been
a pleasure to work with, not only are they
friendly and enthusiastic, but they were
a fantastic addition to my team, even if
it was only for a while whilst doing their
practicals. Based on the level of excellence
of these students, I have now employed
some of the Cape Wine Academy Graduates
and plan on doing so again in the future.
Thank you, Cape Wine Academy, and I
urge you to keep up the excellent work,”
Says Marilyn Cooper, a Cape Wine Master
and CEO of the Cape Wine Academy, “The
Wine Advisor - Level 1 Cape Sommelier
Programme has been a most rewarding
project. We saw young, unemployed
youths come in and educated, enthusiastic
grownups leave, ready to take on what the
world has to offer. We would like to thank
all the hospitality and retail companies that
took on these students for their practicals.
Your input was invaluable. Now it’s time to
employ these well-qualified students within
the wine, retail and hospitality industries.”
If you would like to employ, interview or
in Gauteng or in the Cape, please phone
Early education boost for Overstrand pre-schools
By Heather D’Alton, Flower Valley Conservation Trust.
Early Childhood Development (ECD) sites in the Overstrand will
receive essential support and capacity building through a new
project launching in April. Flower Valley Conservation Trust is rolling
out the project, which aims to further improve the quality of
ECD learning in the region.
Flower Valley has been appointed as a service provider for the
Western Cape Department of Social Development. Up to seven
of the area’s pre-schools, many in vulnerable communities in the
Gansbaai region and surrounding rural areas will receive support.
Improved learning programmes, infrastructure upgrades
and development, administration and management assistance,
and legislative compliance and registration will be looked at. The
project has further been approached to assist non-profit organisations
working with home-based care in the region.
According to the programme’s coordinator, Gabrielle Jonker, “The
needs of young children in the Overstrand are great and complex
and require a spirit of collaboration and partnership. This
programme hopes to hear and respond to the voices of all those
concerned with the wellbeing of young children in the Overstrand,
thereby benefitting marginalised and vulnerable children
and communities.”
Recent studies show that more than six million children up to
the age of seven have either very little or no exposure to early
Onderstok blok op Elsenburg byna 80 jaar oud!
Deur Anton Nel, Lektor: Wingerdbou, Elsenburg Landbou Opleidingsinstituut.
In die wingerdseksie van die Wes-Kaapse
Departement van Landbou se navorsingsplaas,
Elsenburg, staan ‘n blokkie onderstokke
onderstokke. Dit lui kortliks soos volg,
maar sal met verdere navorsing meer ekstensief
uitgebrei kan word.
In die middel van die 1800’s (1864/1865)
val ‘n wingerdluis die wingerde van
Frankryk aan. In 1868 word die wingerdluis
as Phylloxera geïdentifiseer en in 1869 tot
1879 word eksperimente gedoen om wynkultivars
op Amerikaanse wingerde te ent.
In 1886 vind die onvermydelike plaas en
filloksera val die Suid-Afrikaanse wingerde
aan.
In Professor Abraham Perold, die vader
van Pinotage, se tyd word verskeie Amerikaanse
kultivars na Suid-Afrika gevoer en
op ‘n proefstasie in Nuweland/Rondebosch
geplant. In 1937 bring Professor Chris Theron,
Indien
enigiets skeef sou loop in die Suid-
Afrikaanse wingerd-industrie, sou daar
onderstokke wees om op terug te val.
Professor Theron het hierdie blokkie onderstokke
daarna gebruik vir entingsproewe.
Die blokkie wingerd staan vandag nog op
Elsenburg en is 76 jaar oud.
Hierdie blokkie wingerd moet ongetwyfeld
bewaar word vir die nageslag. Daar gaan
van die wingerdseksie van Elsenburg Land-
childhood development in South Africa. It has been found that,
without the appropriate stimulation at a young age, children may
struggle to learn later in life.
Jonker says, “Only together can we make essential progress in
the interests of young children. This programme will support all
the good work already being undertaken daily, and will add value
where it is can. Working with young children is primarily about
them – the children. It is about their needs and their rights and
respecting the preciousness of childhood.”
Flower Valley, through the Agulhas Biodiversity Initiative (ABI),
ran a programme from 1999 till the end of 2010 to upskill ECD
practitioners and to promote good practice through training and
development. Flower Valley also hosts a pre-school on Flower
Valley Farm for children aged between two and six, offering an
environmental education through the Eco-Schools programme.
According to Lesley Richardson, Executive Director of Flower Valley,
the new project will form part of a long-term ECD programme
in the Overstrand region. She says an aim is also to encourage
increased emphasis on environmental education. One way is
through participation in Eco-Schools.
How to care for your earthworms
By Helen Manson-Kullin, Legacy Landscapes.
We are definitely not talking about taking care of hamsters
here! Worms are the ‘in’ pet to have. Gone are the days of those
ghastly white rats and rabbits. These are the ultimate ‘Eco pets’!
Right, we have learnt how cool they are and the amazing fertiliser
they produce, we have built them a home; now all we need to
know is what to do with the fertiliser, and how to look after our
earthworms.
How to care for your worms:
1. Do not feed them plants from the onion family (garlic, shallots,
leek);
2. Do not feed them citrus fruits or meat (can lead to bad smells
and maggots);
3. Too much food will result in bad odours. Make sure that the
worms are eating what you are putting into the bin before
adding more;
4. Too little food will result in very stringy, pale-looking worms.
Do you have enough food in your worm bin for healthy
worms? A happy worm is fat and red to pink, with a slightly
pearlescent shiny look to them;
5. The bedding must remain damp, but not soggy.
Harvesting
After a few months there should be a marked reduction in the
amount of bedding in the bin. Dark, crumbly worm castings will
have collected in a layer on the bottom of the bin. The quickest
method to remove the worm castings is to begin feeding the
worms on only one side of the bin. Wait two weeks until the
worms have migrated to that side, then move the bedding from
the whole bin to that side and remove the layer of finished worm
castings. Use the worm castings on plants; 1/3 worm castings
to 2/3 soil. Add new moistened bedding to the empty side of
the bin. Next time you add food, put it in the new bedding. The
worms will migrate into the new bedding to eat the food. After
few more months, repeat the procedure to remove the finished
worm castings from the other side of the bin.
A healthy worm
Good healthy casts look like excellent
colombian roast coffee!
Worm catings in our lawn
Hints for happy worms
Light - Worms usually live underground, so they thrive in an
environment that is cool, dark and moist. To keep the worm farm
dark, put newspaper, hessian or another bin on top of the food
bin, but always lift this cover before adding more food.
Moisture - Worms thrive in moisture and should not be allowed
to dry out. A light spray of fresh water when the worm farm is
first constructed will generally provide sufficient moisture for
the farm. Once the farm is settled in you should not need to add
extra water. If you add too much extra water or allow rainwater
to get into the bins, the worms may drown.
Food - Worms are voracious (supersonic) eaters. Once the worms
are settled in and growing, give them a good supply of suitable
food. MAKE SURE IT’S NOT TOO MUCH!
Cool facts about vermicasting (worm composting)
• Turning organic wastes into casts takes 22–32 days depending
on density of waste and earthworm maturity (regular
composting requires 30–40 days, followed by 3–4 months
curing).
• Vermicast does not need curing, but fresh casts undergo 2
weeks of nitrification where ammonium transforms to nitrate,
a form that plants can uptake.
• Worms should not be crowded, so the ideal stocking density is
150 earthworms/L of waste.
• Earthworms ingest about 75% of their body weight/day; a
0.2g worm eats about 0.15g/day.
• If you discover earthworms trying to escape any system, it is a
good indication that something is wrong with their feed or
environment.
Farmers! Take note of this please. Like roses in the wine
industry, these little guys can be a very important early
indicator of problems with your soil. Basic agriculture will
teach you that a lack of bio-organisms in your soil is a huge
no-no!
Of course if you decide it’s all too much of a mission, you could
give the worms to your hubby (for fishing...) for his next birthday!
Ps. I have just been advised that the ‘tea’ that comes out the bottom
of your worm farm is very strong stuff and should be diluted
with aged water (NO chlorine), say about a cottage cheese tub of
raw tea to 3 Litres of water; you can also add a few table spoons
of molasses to really boost microbial activity. Then give it all a
good stir, and aerate it regularly over the next 24hours or so. You
could also use dry clay bricks for aeration (they release bubbles),
and usually need to be changed every 4 hours or so. If you would
like to make the casts into a ‘tea’, put them in a stocking and
soak them, following the directions for using just ‘tea’.
FREEDOM DAY / MONTH
Undoubtedly much has changed since 1994 and there has been progress in every sphere of society,
but we are aware that more must still be done.
We must also remain mindful of the path to our future. The National Development Plan is our future roadmap. The plan outlines
the type of society we are striving for in 2030, where no one is hungry, where everyone is able to go to school and further
their studies, where work is available, where everyone is making a contribution because each person have been provided with
what they need to live their full potential.
Omkeerstrategie vir plase in plek
Deur Wouter Kriel, Wes-Kaapse Ministerie van Landbou en Landelike ontwikkeling.
Die Wes-Kaapse Minister van Landbou en
Landelike ontwikkeling, Gerrit van Rensburg,
het onlangs twee plaasprojekte in
die Klein Karoo besoek. Die Wes-Kaapse
Departement van Landbou, tesame met
Casidra is betrokke by beide projekte met
‘n omkeerstrategie om die twee plase te
Waaikraal buite Dysselsdorp, Oudtshoorn,
is ook ‘n staatsplaas en is altyd beperk as
gevolg van `n tekort aan besproeiingswater.
Die Departement het dus Askampdam
herstel en vergroot tot 800 000m 3 teen ‘n
koste van R5,4 miljoen. Meer opsies ten
opsigte van gewasverbouing is nou moontlik,
soos byvoorbeeld inheemse plante
herstel tot winsgewende projekte.
Amalienstein, geleë op die R62 tussen Ladysmith
en Calitzdorp, is een van die plase
waar ‘n omkeerstrategie in plek gestel is.
Op hierdie staatsplaas is die vrugteboorde
vervang met weidings en die melkery
uitgebrei van 80 diere na 150. Twee kuddes
nie.
maak. Die gebruik van hoë kwaliteit materiaal
verseker voorts jare se hanteringsgemak.
Uiteindelik is die primêre doel van hanteringsfasiliteite
tweërlei van aard:
• Dit verminder stres by diere.
14 The Farm Worker/Die Plaaswerker April • May 2013
daar ‘n paar faktore wat in ag geneem behoort
te word:
• Eerstens moet die plasing van die
fasiliteit bepaal word. Diere moet nie
nodig hê om te ver te loop om die
fasiliteite te bereik nie. Plasing so na as
moontlik aan die opstal skakel die
probleem grootliks uit en voorkom
onnodige heen-en-weer ryery as
toerusting of entstowwe dalk by die huis
vergeet is.
• Die belangrikste deel van hanteringsfasiliteite
is die drukgang. Alles moet
daar rondom beplan word. Die drukgang
moet teen ‘n effense helling opgerig
word, sodat die beeste verplig is om
opdraand daarin te beweeg. ‘n Helling van
so 1:70 is ideaal.
Meeste mense werk met beeste van regs af;
nooit minder as twee beeslengtes wees nie.
Vanweë hul kudde-instink, bondel beeste
gewoonlik bymekaar.
langer as 14 beeslengtes is minder effektief,
per mediumgrootte koei, is gewoonlik genoeg.
Vertikale pale moet op intervalle per dier
geplaas word. Soms verkies boere ‘n kleiner
Hoewel ‘n nekklamp nuttig is, is ‘n drukgang
Baie
Biddeloosheid is sonde, want jy is verwaand as jy dink jy
doen.
gedurig. Hulle boer voor die troon van
God. Mense wat dink hulle kan sonder
God en Sy hulp klaarkom, bid selde of ooit.
Biddeloosheid is dus die simptoom van ’n
ernstige geestelike siekte: hoogmoed en
verwaandheid. Ons dink ons kan heel goed
sonder God, en daarom ook sonder gebed,
klaarkom. Ons vertrou op onsself. Ons
vertrou op óns rykdom, óns wysheid, óns
krag, óns gesondheid, óns wetenskap, óns
tegnologie, óns voorspellings, óns planne
en óns spanne, óns polisse en mediese
fondse.
moeilikheid is.
deegresepte nie, want deeg is nou eenmaal nie my sterkpunt nie.
Ek dink hierdie is ‘n gulde
my lewe met julle.
So, hierdie maand het ek lekker koekieresepte.
Ek dink almal
in ons huis was lus vir koekies, want binne ‘n week was die blik
leeg.
myne.
Kondensmelkkoekies
Bestanddele
250g margarien of botter
¾ koppie suiker
1t vanielje essens
1 blikkie kondensmelk
2t bakpoeier
4 koppies koekmeel
Metode
Verhit oond tot 180ºC. Room botter en suiker. Voeg vanielje en
kondensmelk by, asook bakpoeier en meel. Rol in klein balletjies
Ek voeg gewoonlik sjokolade stukkies by die mengsel, vir daardie
Voeg
klapper by en meng. Sif meel, kakao, bakpoeier en sout by die
beslag.
Bestanddele
250g margarien of botter
½ koppie wit suiker
½ koppie bruin suiker
1 groot eier
1t vanielje essens
2 koppies koekmeel
½ t bakpoeier
1t koeksoda
Knippie sout
Metode
Verhit oond tot 180ºC. Smeer koekplate uit met margarien. Room
200ml vlapoeier by die resep. Volg dan die basiese resep.
Gemmerkoekies
Wanneer die reën weer so lekker val, bring
almal bymekaar en maak ‘n koekblik vol lekker koekies.
Stuur gerus jou deegresepte vir my na: Randrekkers (Vir aandag:
Pap smear, what is it?
By Marelle Fortuin.
I remember as a child, wondering what a pap smear was. You see,
I am somewhat of an eaves dropper; have been since childhood. I
must admit that if I focus really hard I can hear almost anything,
especially if it is something I want to hear.
So now here I am, little girl wondering what this smear is and
thinking why is it pap? You know, like the Afrikaans word “pap”
meaning porridge or soft, depending on the context. It was, as
you can imagine, very confusing. Somewhere between varsity and
working I found some self confidence and when visiting my doctor
asked all sorts of questions, the first one being about this Pap
smear thing.
I’m sure there are many ladies and girls out there wondering what
this awful thing is and why we should have it done. Well here it
goes…
A pap smear is a test done by a gynaecologist to detect early cell
changes in the neck of the womb, which may later progress to
cancer.
How is a pap smear done?
An instrument (speculum; this can be plastic or metal) is placed
into the vagina and cells are scraped off the surface of the cervix.
I know this sounds scary, but the test is quick and painless; you
may however experience some discomfort. Cells gathered from
your cervix are put onto a glass slide which is then sent to the
laboratory for examination under a microscope.
Results are usually available in 2 to 3 weeks after having the test.
It might have to be repeated if the amount of cells collected is not
sufficient.
When you get your test results, abnormalities may show. These
abnormalities are not necessarily cancer; it may also indicate an
infection.
Things to avoid before going for a Pap smear:
• Avoid vaginal creams.
Noudat al my vriendinne trou, het ek begin
sien hoe baie mense stiefkinders en stiefouers
word. Julle hoef nie bekommerd te
wees nie, ek gaan nie weer oor trou praat
Ek dink
byvoorbeeld aan my eie gesin en familie;
families of stieffamilies laat werk.
Wanneer twee mense trou en hul kinders
saam grootmaak en as ‘n gesin saam
woon, kan dit ‘n uitdaging wees, maar
ook ‘n bedekte seën. Al voel jy as ouer baie
jou kinders, mag jou kinders dalk nie so
Vat jou tyd, gee kans
20 The Farm Worker/Die Plaaswerker April • May 2013
vir almal om eers
gemaklik te wees
met mekaar
voordat jy jou
troudag beplan.
Probeer om
nie te gou na
jou egskeiding
verandering in
jou kind se lewe
te bring nie. Gee
kans vir hom of
haar om dit te
verwerk en dan
eers kan jy nuwe
mense in hul
lewens in bring.
Kinders wil graag veilig voel, liefde hê,
• Avoid intercourse for 48 hours before the test.
• Be checked regularly for infections.
When should you go for a Pap smear?
It is recommended for all women older than 16. You should go
every two years until the age of 30; after 30 you should go every
three years after 3 normal test results in concurrence.
Cervical cancer has few or no symptoms; the best thing is to go
for Pap smears regularly. Don’t put it off; it might save your life.
(Source: all4women)
kaar respekteer.
Onthou ook dat almal verskil. Net omdat jy

Precision irrigation – a way forward
Compiled by Leensie Streicher.
South Africa receives an average rainfall of 495 mm, well below
the global average of 860 mm/a. The total renewable water
available per inhabitant is just 1 106 m3/a, placing South Africa
among the driest quintile of countries in the world. Water, and
specifically water for irrigation thus is a scarce commodity and the
words of former UN Secretary General Kofi Anan should be taken
to heart when he said ”We need a Blue Revolution in agriculture
that focusses on increasing productivity per unit of water – more
crop per drop.”
According to international criteria, over 90% of South Africa is
classified as dryland, i.e. arid to sub-humid, with 82% being classified
as arid to semi-arid. Most of the country receives summer
rain that is poorly distributed, with droughts being common phenomena.
Most of the sub-humid to humid areas are non-arable
due to steep slopes and/or poor quality soils. Thus, only around
13% of the country is suitable for rain-fed cropping.
Potential in South Africa
Precision agriculture has the potential to reduce costs and increase
yields by means of more efficient and effective application
of crop inputs. It can also reduce environmental impacts by allowing
farmers to apply inputs at the appropriate rate only.
Precision irrigation, as an aspect of precision agriculture, is a
relatively new concept in irrigation farming worldwide. It involves
the application of irrigation water in optimum quantities over an
area of land which is not uniform and has variations in soil type,
soil water capacity, potential yield and topography. Precision
irrigation provides a sustainable agricultural system which uses
resources efficiently and develops and maintains the actual water
demands. Precision agriculture is a knowledge-based technical
management system which should optimise farm profit and minimise
the impact of agriculture on the environment.
The traditional irrigation farmer in South Africa manages crops as
a unit, which is usually uniformly planted, fertilised and irrigated.
Uniform application of fertiliser or water is applied to a field, but
the yield potential causes that some zones are over-fertilised or
over-irrigated and others are under-fertilised or under-irrigated.
The purpose of this paper is to indicate the potential of precision
irrigation in South Africa as well as the potential effect on the
profit margin of an irrigation farm by means of a centre pivot
case study of irrigated wheat.
Precision agriculture uses sophisticated equipment which supplies
sophisticated information to the modern farm manager. Precision
irrigation, which is one of the divisions in precision agriculture,
will become more important in future to protect the scarce water
resources in South Africa and the world.
Measuring techniques for irrigation scheduling
Knowing when to irrigate and how much plant-available water
the soil profile can hold, can assist an irrigator in improving
irrigation water-use efficiency. In order to implement different
irrigation-scheduling strategies efficiently, measurements need to
be made. Types of measuring techniques can be broadly classified
as plant, soil or atmospheric based.
• Plant-based techniques
Several plant-based measuring techniques have been studied for
their potential use in irrigation scheduling. This includes measuring
canopy temperature, measurement of leaf-water and predawn
leaf-water potential measurements.
• Soil-based techniques
Measurement of soil-water status has a long history, from the
tensio-meters, to the neutron probe, through to a whole range
of tools including the wetting front detector (WFD) that reframed
the age-old irrigation scheduling question from ‘when to turn the
water on’ to ‘when to turn it off’.
• Atmospheric-based approaches
Atmospheric-based approaches apply, through biophysical modelling
of the soil-crop-atmosphere system, thermodynamic limits to
the amount of water that can evaporate from a cropped surface
under a particular set of environmental conditions.
There is no simple way to measure water-use efficiency, but when
the effort is made, the results invariably show that there is vast
room for improvement. Irrigation is just one part of a profitable
farm business, and researchers have perhaps often not always
fully understood the constraints under which irrigators operate.
Ultimately, together as water users, we will need to learn our
way into the future and become better managers of water and
the solutes it carries; this will involve a whole range of different
technologies.
Peer pressure, choose your
friends wisely
By Marelle Fortuin.
We have all experienced a bit of peer pressure in our lives,
whether it’s good or bad. Yes, there is such a thing as good peer
pressure.
Your peers are those people who are in the same age bracket as
you, in other words your friends or cousins or classmates. Peer
pressure is the influence that your peers have on you.
This pressure can start at a very early age, from when you start
to socialise with others and onwards. If you watch your younger
brother or sister carefully you will notice that they are easily influenced
by what their friends are saying, doing or wearing.
Many teens get influenced to do bad things to others, because
“it’s ok, we won’t get caught” or “I’ve done it, so you must also
do it.”
It is important to stand by what you believe in and learn to say
no in an uncomfortable position. Yes, you might not be the most
popular kid at school then, but it will blow over and soon you will
find teens that are just like you. You will see that it will be much
easier and comfortable to be friends with people that are like you
and, in time, others will learn to respect you for taking a stand
and sticking to what you believe.
Teenagers, it seem, have the worst form of peer pressure. When
you are a teen you want to fit in, being part of a group and most
of us would do as the group does. That is why most of us do the
things we do; in a way when we are young our friends shape our
personalities. Just sit back and think how you act, speak and think
when you are among different people. If your friends are sporty,
you will also participate in sport; if they swear and don’t do their
homework, chances are you will too.
Your peers can also influence the way you feel; if your friends are
positive people, you will be too and if at an odd occasion you
do feel a bit down your friends will lift you up with their positive
spirits; the opposite will happen when you have negative friends.
Try it, if you have friends that are bad, that do bad things, that
don’t want better lives for themselves, try and find friends who
play sports and do their homework and want to do something
with their lives and see how it positively influence you.
It is true: we do act like the people we surround ourselves with,
whether you notice it or not.
This does not change when you become an adult. Some adults
still act like their friends and act differently in the company of different
groups of friends.
This is why you should decide now as a teenager who you are and
who you would like to be and find peers with the same goals,
dreams and ambition to help you achieve these aspirations. Don’t
let peer pressure stand in the way of your future.
