today <strong>in</strong> certa<strong>in</strong> circles Christ and his preachers are held up to<br />

like contempt.<br />

25:15 {Informed} (\enephanisan\). Same word as <strong>in</strong> 23:15,22;<br />

25:2 which see. {Ask<strong>in</strong>g for sentence aga<strong>in</strong>st him} (\aitoumenoi<br />

kat' autou katadik•n\). Only N.T. example of this old word<br />

(penalty, f<strong>in</strong>e, condemnation) from \kata\ and \dik•\ (justice<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st).<br />

25:16 {It is not <strong>the</strong> custom of <strong>the</strong> Romans} (\hoti ouk est<strong>in</strong> ethos<br />

R•maiois\). If a direct quotation, \hoti\ is recitative as <strong>in</strong><br />

Authorized Version. Canterbury Revision takes it as <strong>in</strong>direct<br />

discourse after \apekrith•n\ (I answered), itself <strong>in</strong> a relative<br />

clause (\pros hous\) with <strong>the</strong> present tense (\est<strong>in</strong>\, is)<br />

preserved as is usual. There is a touch of disda<strong>in</strong> (Furneaux) <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> tone of Festus. He may refer to a demand of <strong>the</strong> Jews before<br />

<strong>the</strong>y asked that Paul be brought to Jerusalem (25:3). At any<br />

rate <strong>the</strong>re is a tone of scorn towards <strong>the</strong> Jews. {Before that <strong>the</strong><br />

accused have} (\pr<strong>in</strong> • ho kat•goroumenos echoi\). This use of <strong>the</strong><br />

optative <strong>in</strong> this temporal clause with \pr<strong>in</strong> •\ <strong>in</strong>stead of <strong>the</strong><br />

subjunctive \an ech•i\ is <strong>in</strong> conformity with literary Greek and<br />

occurs only <strong>in</strong> Luke's writ<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> N.T. (Robertson, _Grammar_,<br />

p. 970). This sequence of modes is a mark of <strong>the</strong> literary style<br />

occasionally seen <strong>in</strong> Luke. It is <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g here to note <strong>the</strong><br />

succession of dependent clauses <strong>in</strong> verses 14-16. {The accusers<br />

face to face} (\kata pros•pon tous kat•gorous\). Same word<br />

\kat•goros\ as <strong>in</strong> 23:30,35; 25:18. This all sounds fair enough.<br />

{And have had opportunity to make his defence concern<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

matter laid aga<strong>in</strong>st him} (\topon te apologias laboi peri tou<br />

egkl•matos\). Literally, "And should receive (\laboi\ optative<br />

for same reason as \echoi\ above, second aorist active of<br />

\lamban•\) opportunity for defence (objective genitive)<br />

concern<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> charge" (\egkl•matos\ <strong>in</strong> N.T. only here and<br />

23:19 which see).<br />

25:17 {When <strong>the</strong>y were come toge<strong>the</strong>r here} (\sunelthont•n<br />

enthade\). Genitive absolute of second aorist active participle<br />

of \sunerchomai\, but without \aut•n\ (<strong>the</strong>y), merely understood.<br />

{Delay} (\anabol•n\). Old word from \anaball•\, only here <strong>in</strong> N.T.<br />

25:18 {Brought} (\epheron\). Imperfect active of \pher•\,<br />

referr<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong>ir repeated charges. {Of such evil th<strong>in</strong>gs as I<br />

supposed} (\h•n eg• hupenooun pon•r•n\). Incorporation of <strong>the</strong><br />
