25:1 {Hav<strong>in</strong>g come <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> prov<strong>in</strong>ce} (\epibas t•i eparchei•i\).<br />

Second aorist active participle of \epiba<strong>in</strong>•\, to set foot upon.<br />

Literally, "Hav<strong>in</strong>g set foot upon his prov<strong>in</strong>ce." \Eparcheia\ is a<br />

late word for prov<strong>in</strong>ce, <strong>in</strong> N.T. only here and 23:34. Judea was<br />

not strictly a prov<strong>in</strong>ce, but a department (Page) of <strong>the</strong> prov<strong>in</strong>ce<br />

of Syria which was under a _propraetor_ (\legatus Caesaris\)<br />

while Judea was under a _procurator_ (\epitropos\). {After three<br />

days} (\meta treis h•meras\). So <strong>in</strong> Ac 28:17 <strong>in</strong> Rome. That is<br />

on <strong>the</strong> third day, with a day of rest <strong>in</strong> between. Precisely <strong>the</strong><br />

language used of <strong>the</strong> resurrection of Jesus "after three days" =<br />

"on <strong>the</strong> third day." So by common usage <strong>the</strong>n and now.<br />

25:2 {The pr<strong>in</strong>cipal men} (\hoi pr•toi\). The first men, <strong>the</strong><br />

lead<strong>in</strong>g men of <strong>the</strong> city, besides <strong>the</strong> chief priests. In verse 15<br />

we have "<strong>the</strong> chief priests and <strong>the</strong> elders." These chief men among<br />

<strong>the</strong> Jews would desire to pay <strong>the</strong>ir respects to <strong>the</strong> new Procurator<br />

on his first visit to Jerusalem. There was ano<strong>the</strong>r high priest<br />

now, Ishmael <strong>in</strong> place of Ananias. {Informed him aga<strong>in</strong>st Paul}<br />

(\enephanisan aut•i kata tou Paulou\). "This renewal of <strong>the</strong><br />

charge after two years, on <strong>the</strong> very first opportunity, is a<br />

measure, not only of <strong>the</strong>ir unsleep<strong>in</strong>g hatred, but of <strong>the</strong><br />

importance which <strong>the</strong>y attached to Paul's <strong>in</strong>fluence" (Furneaux).<br />

{Besought} (\parekaloun\). Imperfect active, kept on beseech<strong>in</strong>g<br />

as a special favour to <strong>the</strong> Jews.<br />

25:3 {Ask<strong>in</strong>g favour aga<strong>in</strong>st him} (\aitoumenoi char<strong>in</strong> kat'<br />

autou\). A favour to <strong>the</strong>mselves (middle voice), not to Paul, but<br />

"aga<strong>in</strong>st" (\kat'\, down, aga<strong>in</strong>st) him. {That he would send for}<br />

(\hop•s metapemps•tai\). First aorist middle subjunctive of<br />

\metapemp•\ (see 24:24,26) with f<strong>in</strong>al particle \hop•s\ like<br />

\h<strong>in</strong>a\. Aorist tense for s<strong>in</strong>gle case. {Lay<strong>in</strong>g wait} (\enedran<br />

poiountes\). See on ¯23:16 for <strong>the</strong> word \enedra\. Old idiom<br />

(Thucydides) for lay<strong>in</strong>g a plot or ambush as here. Only <strong>the</strong>se two<br />

uses of \enedra\ <strong>in</strong> N.T. Two years before <strong>the</strong> Sanhedr<strong>in</strong> had<br />

agreed to <strong>the</strong> plot of <strong>the</strong> forty conspirators. Now <strong>the</strong>y propose<br />

one on <strong>the</strong>ir own <strong>in</strong>itiative. {On <strong>the</strong> way} (\kata t•n hodon\).<br />

Down along, up and down along <strong>the</strong> way. Plenty of opportunity<br />

would occur between Caesarea and Jerusalem for ambush and<br />
