<strong>Word</strong> <strong>Pictures</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> NT [Acts: Chapter 24]<br />

orig<strong>in</strong>al purpose to make <strong>the</strong>se "offer<strong>in</strong>gs" before he came to<br />

Jerusalem (cf. 18:18). He came up to worship (verse 11) and<br />

to be present at Pentecost (20:16).<br />

24:18 {Amidst which} (\en hail\). That is, "<strong>in</strong> which offer<strong>in</strong>gs"<br />

(<strong>in</strong> present<strong>in</strong>g which offer<strong>in</strong>gs, 21:27). {They found me} (my<br />

accusers here present, \heuron me\), {purified <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> temple}<br />

(\h•gnismenon en t•i hier•i\). Perfect passive participle of<br />

\hagniz•\ (same verb <strong>in</strong> 21:24,26) state of completion of <strong>the</strong><br />

Jewish sacrifices which had gone on for seven days (21:27), <strong>the</strong><br />

very opposite of <strong>the</strong> charges made. {With no crowd} (\ou meta<br />

ochlou\). "Not with a crowd" till <strong>the</strong> Asiatic Jews ga<strong>the</strong>red one<br />

(21:27). {Nor yet with tumult} (\oude meta thorubou\). They<br />

made <strong>the</strong> tumult (27:30), not Paul. Till <strong>the</strong>y made <strong>the</strong> stir, all<br />

was quiet.<br />

24:19 {But certa<strong>in</strong> Jews from Asia} (\t<strong>in</strong>es de apo t•s Alias<br />

Ioudaioi\). No verb appears <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Greek for <strong>the</strong>se words. Perhaps<br />

he meant to say that "certa<strong>in</strong> Jews from Asia charged me with<br />

do<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>se th<strong>in</strong>gs." Instead of say<strong>in</strong>g that, Paul stops to<br />

expla<strong>in</strong> that <strong>the</strong>y are not here, a thoroughly Paul<strong>in</strong>e anacoluthon<br />

(2Co 7:5) as <strong>in</strong> 26:9. "The passage as it stands is <strong>in</strong>st<strong>in</strong>ct<br />

with life, and seems to exhibit <strong>the</strong> abruptness so characteristic<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Paul<strong>in</strong>e Epistles" (Page). {Who ought to have been here<br />

before <strong>the</strong>e} (\hous edei epi sou pare<strong>in</strong>ai\). This use of \epi\<br />

with genitive of <strong>the</strong> person is common. The imperfect <strong>in</strong>dicative<br />

with verbs of necessity and obligation to express failure to live<br />

up to it is common <strong>in</strong> Greek (Robertson, _Grammar_, pp. 919-21).<br />

"The accusers who were present had not witnessed <strong>the</strong> alleged<br />

offence: those who could have given evidence at first-hand were<br />

not present" (Furneaux). There was no case <strong>in</strong> a Roman court.<br />

These Asiatic Jews are never heard of after <strong>the</strong> riot, though <strong>the</strong>y<br />

almost succeeded <strong>in</strong> kill<strong>in</strong>g Paul <strong>the</strong>n. {If <strong>the</strong>y had aught aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />

me} (\ei ti echoien pros eme\). A condition of <strong>the</strong> fourth class<br />

or undeterm<strong>in</strong>ed with less likelihood of be<strong>in</strong>g determ<strong>in</strong>ed (\ei\<br />

with <strong>the</strong> optative, Robertson, _Grammar_, p. 1021). This is a<br />

"mixed condition" (_op.cit._, p. 1022) with a conclusion of <strong>the</strong><br />

second class.<br />

24:20 {These men <strong>the</strong>mselves} (\autoi houtoi\). S<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> Asiatic<br />

Jews are not present and <strong>the</strong>se men are. {Wrong do<strong>in</strong>g}<br />

(\adik•ma\). Or misdeed. Old word from \adike•\, to do wrong. In<br />

<strong>the</strong> N.T. only here and Ac 18:14; Re 18:5. Paul uses "\adik•ma\"<br />

from <strong>the</strong> standpo<strong>in</strong>t of his accusers. "To a less sensitive<br />
