active of \eisp•da•\, old verb, but here only <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> N.T. Cf.<br />

\ekp•da•\ <strong>in</strong> 14:14. The jailor was at <strong>the</strong> outer door and he<br />

wanted lights to see what was <strong>in</strong>side <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ner prison.<br />

16:29 {Trembl<strong>in</strong>g for fear} (\entromos genomenos\). "Becom<strong>in</strong>g<br />

terrified." The adjective \entromos\ (<strong>in</strong> terror) occurs <strong>in</strong> N.T.<br />

only here and 7:32; Heb 12:21. {Fell down} (\prosepesen\).<br />

Second aorist active <strong>in</strong>dicative of \prospipt•\, old verb. An act<br />

of worship as Cornelius before Peter (10:25), when<br />

\prosekun•sen\ is used.<br />

16:30 {Brought <strong>the</strong>m out} (\progag•n autous ex•\). Second aorist<br />

active participle of \proag•\, to lead forward. He left <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

prisoners <strong>in</strong>side, feel<strong>in</strong>g that he had to deal with <strong>the</strong>se men whom<br />

he had evidently heard preach or had heard of <strong>the</strong>ir message as<br />

servants of <strong>the</strong> Most High God as <strong>the</strong> slave girl called <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

There may have been superstition beh<strong>in</strong>d his fear, but <strong>the</strong>re was<br />

evident s<strong>in</strong>cerity.<br />

16:31 {To be saved} (\h<strong>in</strong>a s•th•\). F<strong>in</strong>al clause with \h<strong>in</strong>a\ and<br />

first aorist passive subjunctive. What did he mean by "saved"?<br />

Certa<strong>in</strong>ly more than escape from peril about <strong>the</strong> prisoners or<br />

because of <strong>the</strong> earthquake, though <strong>the</strong>se had <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>fluences on<br />

him. Cf. way of salvation <strong>in</strong> verse 17. {Believe on <strong>the</strong> Lord<br />

Jesus} (\Pisteuson epi ton kurion I•soun\). This is what Peter<br />

told Cornelius (10:43). This is <strong>the</strong> heart of <strong>the</strong> matter for<br />

both <strong>the</strong> jailor and his house.<br />

16:32 {They spake <strong>the</strong> word of God} (\elal•san ton logon tou<br />

<strong>the</strong>ou\). So Paul and Silas gave fuller exposition of <strong>the</strong> way of<br />

life to <strong>the</strong> jailor "with all that were <strong>in</strong> his house." It was a<br />

remarkable service with keenest attention and <strong>in</strong>terest, <strong>the</strong><br />

jailor with his warden, slaves, and family.<br />

16:33 {Washed <strong>the</strong>ir stripes} (\elousen apo t•n pl•g•n\).<br />

Deissmann (_Bible Studies_, p. 227) cites an <strong>in</strong>scription of<br />

Pergamum with this very construction of \apo\ and <strong>the</strong> ablative,<br />

to wash off, though it is an old verb. This first aorist active<br />

<strong>in</strong>dicative of \lou•\, to ba<strong>the</strong>, succ<strong>in</strong>ctly shows what <strong>the</strong> jailor<br />

did to remove <strong>the</strong> sta<strong>in</strong>s left by <strong>the</strong> rods of <strong>the</strong> lictors (verse<br />

22). \Nipt•\ was used for wash<strong>in</strong>g parts of <strong>the</strong> body. {And was<br />

baptized, he and all his, immediately} (\kai ebaptisth• autos kai<br />

hoi autou hapantes parachr•ma\). The verb is <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> s<strong>in</strong>gular<br />
