10:22 {Ye shall be hated} (\eses<strong>the</strong> misoumenoi\). Periphrastic<br />

future passive, l<strong>in</strong>ear action. It will go on through <strong>the</strong> ages.<br />

{For my name's sake} (\dia to onoma mou\). In <strong>the</strong> O.T. as <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Targums and <strong>the</strong> Talmud "<strong>the</strong> name" as here stands for <strong>the</strong> person<br />

(Mt 19:29; Ac 5:41; 9:16; 15:26). "He that endureth to <strong>the</strong> end"<br />

(\ho hupome<strong>in</strong>as eis telos\). Effective aorist participle with<br />

future <strong>in</strong>dicative.<br />

10:23 {Till <strong>the</strong> Son of man be come} (\he•s elth•i ho huios tou<br />

anthr•pou\). Moffatt puts it "before <strong>the</strong> Son of man arrives" as<br />

if Jesus referred to this special tour of Galilee. Jesus could<br />

overtake <strong>the</strong>m. Possibly so, but it is by no means clear. Some<br />

refer it to <strong>the</strong> Transfiguration, o<strong>the</strong>rs to <strong>the</strong> com<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> Holy<br />

Spirit at Pentecost, o<strong>the</strong>rs to <strong>the</strong> Second Com<strong>in</strong>g. Some hold that<br />

Mat<strong>the</strong>w has put <strong>the</strong> say<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> wrong context. O<strong>the</strong>rs bluntly<br />

say that Jesus was mistaken, a very serious charge to make <strong>in</strong> his<br />

<strong>in</strong>structions to <strong>the</strong>se preachers. The use of \he•s\ with aorist<br />

subjunctive for a future event is a good Greek idiom.<br />

10:25 {Beelzebub} (\beezeboul\ accord<strong>in</strong>g to B, \beelzeboul\ by<br />

most Greek MSS., \beelzeboub\ by many non-Greek MSS.). The<br />

etymology of <strong>the</strong> word is also unknown, whe<strong>the</strong>r "lord of a<br />

dwell<strong>in</strong>g" with a pun on "<strong>the</strong> master of <strong>the</strong> house"<br />

(\oikodespot•n\) or "lord of flies" or "lord of dung" or "lord of<br />

idolatrous sacrifices." It is evidently a term of reproach. "An<br />

opprobrious epi<strong>the</strong>t; exact form of <strong>the</strong> word and mean<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong><br />

name have given more trouble to commentators than it is all<br />

worth" (Bruce). See Mt 12:24.<br />

10:26 {Fear <strong>the</strong>m not <strong>the</strong>refore} (\m• oun phob•th•te autous\).<br />

Repeated <strong>in</strong> verses 28 and 31 (\m• phobeis<strong>the</strong>\ present middle<br />

imperative here <strong>in</strong> contrast with aorist passive subjunctive <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> preced<strong>in</strong>g prohibitions). Note also <strong>the</strong> accusative case with<br />

<strong>the</strong> aorist passive subjunctive, transitive though passive. See<br />

same construction <strong>in</strong> Lu 12:5. In Mt 10:28 <strong>the</strong> construction is<br />

with \apo\ and <strong>the</strong> ablative, a translation Hebraism as <strong>in</strong> Lu<br />

12:4 (Robertson, _Grammar of <strong>the</strong> Greek N.T. <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Light of<br />

Historical Research_, p. 577).<br />

10:28 {Destroy both soul and body <strong>in</strong> hell} (\kai psuch•n kai s•ma<br />

apolesai en geenn•i\). Note "soul" here of <strong>the</strong> eternal spirit,<br />
