and delay. The K<strong>in</strong>g's bus<strong>in</strong>ess required haste. Elisha's servant<br />

was not to tarry for salutations or salaams (2Ki 4:29). These<br />

oriental greet<strong>in</strong>gs were tedious, complicated, and often<br />

meddlesome if o<strong>the</strong>rs were present or engaged <strong>in</strong> a barga<strong>in</strong>.<br />

10:5 {First say} (\pr•ton legete\). Say first. The adverb<br />

\pr•ton\ can be construed with "enter" (\eiselth•te\), but<br />

probably with \legete\ is right. The word spoken is <strong>the</strong> usual<br />

oriental salutation.<br />

10:6 {A son of peace} (\huios eir•n•s\). A Hebraism, though some<br />

examples occur <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> vernacular _Ko<strong>in</strong>•_ papyri. It means one<br />

<strong>in</strong>cl<strong>in</strong>ed to peace, describ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> head of <strong>the</strong> household. {Shall<br />

rest} (\epanapa•setai\). Second future passive of \epanapau•\, a<br />

late double compound (\epi, ana\) of <strong>the</strong> common verb \pau•\. {It<br />

shall turn to you aga<strong>in</strong>} (\eph' hum•s anakampsei\). Common verb<br />

\anakampt•\, to bend back, return. The peace <strong>in</strong> that case will<br />

bend back with bless<strong>in</strong>g upon <strong>the</strong> one who spoke it.<br />

10:7 {In that same house} (\en aut•i t•i oiki•i\). Literally, <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> house itself, not "<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same house" (\en t•i aut•i<br />

oiki•i\), a different construction. A free render<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong><br />

common Lukan idiom is, "<strong>in</strong> that very house." {Eat<strong>in</strong>g}<br />

(\esthontes\). An old poetic verb \esth•\ for \esthi•\ that<br />

survives <strong>in</strong> late Greek. {Such th<strong>in</strong>gs as <strong>the</strong>y give} (\ta par'<br />

aut•n\). "The th<strong>in</strong>gs from <strong>the</strong>m." {For <strong>the</strong> labourer is worthy of<br />

his hire} (\axios gar ho ergat•s tou misthou autou\). In Mt<br />

10:10 we have \t•s troph•s autou\ (his food). 1Ti 5:18 has<br />

this say<strong>in</strong>g quoted as scripture. That is not impossible if Luke<br />

wrote by A.D. 62. Paul <strong>the</strong>re however may quote only De 25:4 as<br />

scripture and get this quotation ei<strong>the</strong>r from Lu 10:7 or from a<br />

proverbial say<strong>in</strong>g of Jesus. It is certa<strong>in</strong>ly not a real objection<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> Paul<strong>in</strong>e authorship of First Timothy. {Go not from<br />

house to house} (\m• metaba<strong>in</strong>ete ex oikias eis oikian\). As a<br />

habit, \m•\ and <strong>the</strong> present imperative, and so avoid waste of<br />

time with such rounds of <strong>in</strong>vitations as would come.<br />

10:8 {Such th<strong>in</strong>gs as are set before you} (\ta parati<strong>the</strong>mena<br />

hum<strong>in</strong>\). The th<strong>in</strong>gs placed before you from time to time (present<br />

passive participle, repetition). Every preacher needs this lesson<br />

of common politeness. These directions may seem perfunctory and<br />

even commonplace, but every teacher of young preachers knows how<br />

necessary <strong>the</strong>y are. Hence <strong>the</strong>y were given both to <strong>the</strong> Twelve and<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Seventy.<br />
