as <strong>in</strong> 2Co 7:11 ra<strong>the</strong>r than adversative as apparently here. See<br />

Mt 5:43f. Love of enemies is <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> O.T., but Jesus ennobles<br />

<strong>the</strong> word, \agapa•\, and uses it of love for one's enemies.<br />

6:28 {That despitefully use you} (\t•n ep•reazont•n hum•s\). This<br />

old verb occurs here only <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> N.T. and <strong>in</strong> 1Pe 3:16, not<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g genu<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> Mt 5:44.<br />

6:29 {On <strong>the</strong> cheek} (\epi t•n siagona\). Mt 5:39 has "right."<br />

Old word mean<strong>in</strong>g jaw or jawbone, but <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> N.T. only here and<br />

Mt 5:39, which see for discussion. It seems an act of violence<br />

ra<strong>the</strong>r than contempt. Sticklers for extreme literalism f<strong>in</strong>d<br />

trouble with <strong>the</strong> conduct of Jesus <strong>in</strong> Joh 18:22f. where Jesus,<br />

on receiv<strong>in</strong>g a slap <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> face, protested aga<strong>in</strong>st it. {Thy<br />

cloke} (\to himation\), {thy coat} (\ton chit•na\). Here <strong>the</strong><br />

upper and more valuable garment (\himation\) is first taken, <strong>the</strong><br />

under and less valuable \chit•n\ last. In Mt 5:40 <strong>the</strong> process<br />

(apparently a legal one) is reversed. {Withhold not} (\m•<br />

k•lus•is\). Aorist subjunctive <strong>in</strong> prohibition aga<strong>in</strong>st committ<strong>in</strong>g<br />

an act. Do not h<strong>in</strong>der him <strong>in</strong> his robb<strong>in</strong>g. It is usually useless<br />

anyhow with modern armed bandits.<br />

6:30 {Ask <strong>the</strong>m not aga<strong>in</strong>} (\m• apaitei\). Here <strong>the</strong> present active<br />

imperative <strong>in</strong> a prohibition, do not have <strong>the</strong> habit of ask<strong>in</strong>g<br />

back. This common verb only here <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> N.T., for \aitous<strong>in</strong>\ is<br />

<strong>the</strong> correct text <strong>in</strong> Lu 12:20. The literary flavour of Luke's<br />

_Ko<strong>in</strong>•_ style is seen <strong>in</strong> his frequent use of words common <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

literary Greek, but appear<strong>in</strong>g nowhere else <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> N.T.<br />

6:31 {As ye would} (\kath•s <strong>the</strong>lete\). In Mt 7:12 <strong>the</strong> Golden<br />

Rule beg<strong>in</strong>s: \Panta hosa ean <strong>the</strong>l•te\. Luke has "likewise"<br />

(\homoi•s\) where Mat<strong>the</strong>w has \hout•s\. See on Mat<strong>the</strong>w for<br />

discussion of <strong>the</strong> say<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

6:32 {What thank have ye?} (\poia h–m<strong>in</strong> charis est<strong>in</strong>;\). What<br />

grace or gratitude is <strong>the</strong>re to you? Mt 5:46 has \misthon\<br />

(reward).<br />

6:33 {Do good} (\agathopoi•te\). Third-class condition, \ean\ and<br />

present subjunctive. This verb not <strong>in</strong> old Greek, but <strong>in</strong> LXX.<br />

{Even s<strong>in</strong>ners} (\kai hoi hamart•loi\). Even <strong>the</strong> s<strong>in</strong>ners, <strong>the</strong><br />

article dist<strong>in</strong>guish<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> class. Mt 5:46 has "even <strong>the</strong><br />
