12:7 {Among <strong>the</strong>mselves} (\pros heautous\). This phrase alone <strong>in</strong><br />

Mark. Lu 20:14 has "with one ano<strong>the</strong>r" (\pros all•lous\),<br />

reciprocal <strong>in</strong>stead of reflexive, pronoun.<br />

12:8 {Killed him and cast him forth} (\apekte<strong>in</strong>an auton, kai<br />

exebalon auton\). Mat<strong>the</strong>w and Luke reverse <strong>the</strong> order, cast forth<br />

and killed.<br />

12:10 {This scripture} (\t•n graph•n taut•n\). This passage of<br />

scripture (Lu 4:21; Joh 19:37; Ac 1:16). It is a quotation from<br />

Ps 118:22f. See on ¯Mt 21:42 for discussion.<br />

12:11 {This} (\haut•\). Fem<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> LXX may refer to {kephal•}<br />

(head) or may be due to <strong>the</strong> Hebrew orig<strong>in</strong>al {z•th} (this th<strong>in</strong>g)<br />

which would be neuter \touto\ <strong>in</strong> a Greek orig<strong>in</strong>al, a translation<br />

Hebraism.<br />

12:12 {Aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong>m} (\pros autous\). So Luke. It was a straight<br />

shot, this parable of <strong>the</strong> Rejected Stone (12:10f.) and <strong>the</strong><br />

longer one of <strong>the</strong> Wicked Husbandmen. There was no mistak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

application, for he had specifically expla<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> application<br />

(Mt 21:43-45). The Sanhedr<strong>in</strong> were so angry that <strong>the</strong>y actually<br />

started or sought to seize him, but fear of <strong>the</strong> populace now more<br />

enthusiastic for Jesus than ever held <strong>the</strong>m back. They went off <strong>in</strong><br />

disgust, but <strong>the</strong>y had to listen to <strong>the</strong> Parable of <strong>the</strong> K<strong>in</strong>g's Son<br />

before go<strong>in</strong>g (Mt 22:1-14).<br />

12:13 {That <strong>the</strong>y might catch him <strong>in</strong> talk} (\h<strong>in</strong>a auton agreus•s<strong>in</strong><br />

log•i\). Ingressive aorist subjunctive. The verb is late from<br />

\agra\ (a hunt or catch<strong>in</strong>g). It appears <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> LXX and papyri.<br />

Here alone <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> N.T. Lu 20:20 has <strong>the</strong> same idea, "that <strong>the</strong>y<br />

may take hold of his speech" (\epilab•ntai autou logon\) while<br />

Mt 22:15 uses \pagideus•s<strong>in</strong>\ (to snare or trap). See discussion<br />

<strong>in</strong> Mat<strong>the</strong>w. We have seen <strong>the</strong> scribes and Pharisees try<strong>in</strong>g to do<br />

this very th<strong>in</strong>g before (Lu 11:33f.). Mark and Mat<strong>the</strong>w note here<br />

<strong>the</strong> comb<strong>in</strong>ation of Pharisees and Herodians as Mark did <strong>in</strong> 3:6.<br />

Mat<strong>the</strong>w speaks of "disciples" or pupils of <strong>the</strong> Pharisees while<br />

Luke calls <strong>the</strong>m "spies" (\enka<strong>the</strong>tous\).<br />
