8:1 {Had noth<strong>in</strong>g to eat} (\m• echont•n ti phag•s<strong>in</strong>\). Genitive<br />

absolute and plural because \ochlou\ a collective substantive.<br />

Not hav<strong>in</strong>g what to eat (deliberative subjunctive reta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>direct question). The repetition of a nature miracle of feed<strong>in</strong>g<br />

four thousand <strong>in</strong> Decapolis disturbs some modern critics who<br />

cannot imag<strong>in</strong>e how Jesus could or would perform ano<strong>the</strong>r miracle<br />

elsewhere so similar to <strong>the</strong> feed<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> five thousand up near<br />

Bethsaida Julias. But both Mark and Mat<strong>the</strong>w give both miracles,<br />

dist<strong>in</strong>guish <strong>the</strong> words for baskets (\koph<strong>in</strong>os, sphuris\), and both<br />

make Jesus later refer to both <strong>in</strong>cidents and use <strong>the</strong>se two words<br />

with <strong>the</strong> same dist<strong>in</strong>ction (Mr 8:19f.; Mt 16:9f.). Surely it is<br />

easier to conceive that Jesus wrought two such miracles than to<br />

hold that Mark and Mat<strong>the</strong>w have made such a jumble of <strong>the</strong> whole<br />

bus<strong>in</strong>ess.<br />

8:2 {Now three days} (\•d• h•merai treis\). This text preserves a<br />

curious paren<strong>the</strong>tic nom<strong>in</strong>ative of time (Robertson, _Grammar_, p.<br />

460). See on ¯Mt 15:32.<br />

8:3 {Are come from far} (\apo makro<strong>the</strong>n eis<strong>in</strong>\). This item alone<br />

<strong>in</strong> Mark.<br />

8:4 {Here} (\h•de\). Of all places, <strong>in</strong> this desert region <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

mounta<strong>in</strong>s. The disciples feel as helpless as when <strong>the</strong> five<br />

thousand were fed. They do not rise to faith <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> unlimited<br />

power of Jesus after all that <strong>the</strong>y have seen.<br />

8:6 {Brake and gave} (\eklasen kai edidou\). Constative aorist<br />

followed by imperfect. The giv<strong>in</strong>g kept on. {To set before <strong>the</strong>m}<br />

(\h<strong>in</strong>a paratith•s<strong>in</strong>\). Present subjunctive describ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

cont<strong>in</strong>uous process.<br />

8:7 {A few small fishes} (\ichthudia oliga\). Mark mentions <strong>the</strong>m<br />

last as if <strong>the</strong>y were served after <strong>the</strong> food, but not so Mt<br />

15:34f.<br />

8:8 {Broken pieces that rema<strong>in</strong>ed over} (\perisseumata<br />

klasmat•n\). Overplus, abundance, rema<strong>in</strong>s of broken pieces not<br />
