<strong>Word</strong> <strong>Pictures</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> NT [Mark: Chapter 3].<br />

concern Satan's cast<strong>in</strong>g out (\ekballei\, <strong>the</strong> very word used of<br />

cast<strong>in</strong>g out demons) Satan (rhetorical question), a k<strong>in</strong>gdom<br />

divided (\meristh•i\, for a mere portion) aga<strong>in</strong>st itself, a house<br />

divided (\meristh•i\) aga<strong>in</strong>st itself, two conditions of <strong>the</strong> third<br />

class undeterm<strong>in</strong>ed, but with prospect of determ<strong>in</strong>ation.<br />

3:27 {Spoil} (\diarpasai\). Plunder, compound verb, thoroughly<br />

ransack. Picture of Satan plunder<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> demons, <strong>the</strong> very tools<br />

(\skeu•\) by which he carried on his bus<strong>in</strong>ess. A _reductio ad<br />

absurdum_. Jesus is <strong>the</strong> conqueror of Satan, not <strong>in</strong> league with<br />

him.<br />

3:29 {Guilty of an eternal s<strong>in</strong>} (\enochos est<strong>in</strong> ai•niou<br />

hamart•matos\). The genitive of <strong>the</strong> penalty occurs here with<br />

\enochos\. In say<strong>in</strong>g that Jesus had an unclean spirit (verse<br />

30) <strong>the</strong>y had attributed to <strong>the</strong> devil <strong>the</strong> work of <strong>the</strong> Holy<br />

Spirit. This is <strong>the</strong> unpardonable s<strong>in</strong> and it can be committed<br />

today by men who call <strong>the</strong> work of Christ <strong>the</strong> work of <strong>the</strong> devil,<br />

Nietzsche may be cited as an <strong>in</strong>stance <strong>in</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t. Those who hope<br />

for a second probation hereafter may ponder carefully how a soul<br />

that eternally s<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> such an environment can ever repent. That<br />

is eternal punishment. The text here is \hamart•matos\ (s<strong>in</strong>), not<br />

\krise•s\ (judgment), as <strong>the</strong> Textus Receptus has it.<br />

3:31 {Stand<strong>in</strong>g without} (\ex• st•kontes\). A late present from<br />

<strong>the</strong> perfect \hest•ka\. Pa<strong>the</strong>tic picture of <strong>the</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r and<br />

bro<strong>the</strong>rs stand<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> outside of <strong>the</strong> house th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g that Jesus<br />

<strong>in</strong>side is beside himself and want<strong>in</strong>g to take him home. They were<br />

crowded out. {They sent unto him, call<strong>in</strong>g him} (\apesteilan pros<br />

auton kalountes auton\). They were unwill<strong>in</strong>g to disclose <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

errand to take him home (Swete) and so get <strong>the</strong> crowd to pass word<br />

unto Jesus on <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>side, "call<strong>in</strong>g him" through o<strong>the</strong>rs. Some of<br />

<strong>the</strong> MSS. add "sisters" to mo<strong>the</strong>r and bro<strong>the</strong>rs as seek<strong>in</strong>g Jesus.<br />

3:32 {Was sitt<strong>in</strong>g about him} (\ekath•to peri auton\). They sat <strong>in</strong><br />

a circle (\kukl•i\) around Jesus with <strong>the</strong> disciples form<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

sort of <strong>in</strong>ner circle.<br />

3:34 {Look<strong>in</strong>g round on <strong>the</strong>m} (\periblepsamenos\). Ano<strong>the</strong>r of<br />

Mark's life-like touches. Jesus calls those who do <strong>the</strong> will of<br />

God his mo<strong>the</strong>r, bro<strong>the</strong>rs, and sisters. This does not prove that<br />

<strong>the</strong> sisters were actually <strong>the</strong>re. The bro<strong>the</strong>rs were hostile and<br />

that gives po<strong>in</strong>t to <strong>the</strong> tragic words of Jesus. One's heart goes<br />

out to Mary who has to go back home without even see<strong>in</strong>g her<br />
