knew him" (\hoti •ideisan auton\). Whe<strong>the</strong>r "to be Christ"<br />

(\Christon e<strong>in</strong>ai\) is genu<strong>in</strong>e or not, that is <strong>the</strong> mean<strong>in</strong>g and is<br />

a direct reference to 1:24 when <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> synagogue <strong>the</strong> demon<br />

recognized and addressed Jesus as <strong>the</strong> Holy One of God. Testimony<br />

from such a source was not calculated to help <strong>the</strong> cause of Christ<br />

with <strong>the</strong> people. He had told <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r demon to be silent. See on<br />

¯Mt 8:29 for discussion of <strong>the</strong> word demon.<br />

1:35 {In <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g, a great while before day} (\pr•i ennucha<br />

lian\). Luke has only "when it was day" (\genomen•s h•meras\).<br />

The word \pr•i\ <strong>in</strong> Mark means <strong>the</strong> last watch of <strong>the</strong> night from<br />

three to six A.M. \Ennucha lian\ means <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> early part of <strong>the</strong><br />

watch while it was still a bit dark (cf. Mr 16:2 \lian pr•i\).<br />

{Rose up and went out} (\anastas ex•l<strong>the</strong>n\). Out of <strong>the</strong> house and<br />

out of <strong>the</strong> city, off (\ap•l<strong>the</strong>n\, even if not genu<strong>in</strong>e, possibly a<br />

conflate read<strong>in</strong>g from 6:32,46). "Flight from <strong>the</strong> unexpected<br />

reality <strong>in</strong>to which His ideal conception of His call<strong>in</strong>g had<br />

brought Him" (H.J. Holtzmann). Gould notes that Jesus seems to<br />

retreat before his sudden popularity, to prayer with <strong>the</strong> Fa<strong>the</strong>r<br />

"that he might not be ensnared by this popularity, or <strong>in</strong> any way<br />

<strong>in</strong>duced to accept <strong>the</strong> ways of ease <strong>in</strong>stead of duty." But Jesus<br />

also had a plan for a preach<strong>in</strong>g tour of Galilee and "He felt He<br />

could not beg<strong>in</strong> too soon. He left <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> night, fear<strong>in</strong>g<br />

opposition from <strong>the</strong> people" (Bruce). Surely many a popular<br />

preacher can understand this mood of Jesus when <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> night he<br />

slips away to a solitary place for prayer. Jesus knew what it was<br />

to spend a whole night <strong>in</strong> prayer. He knew <strong>the</strong> bless<strong>in</strong>g of prayer<br />

and <strong>the</strong> power of prayer. {And <strong>the</strong>re prayed} (\k'akei<br />

pros•ucheto\). Imperfect tense pictur<strong>in</strong>g Jesus as pray<strong>in</strong>g through<br />

<strong>the</strong> early morn<strong>in</strong>g hours.<br />

1:36 {Followed after him} (\katedi•xen auton\). Hunted him out<br />

(Moffatt). Perfective use of <strong>the</strong> preposition \kata\ (down to <strong>the</strong><br />

f<strong>in</strong>ish). The verb \di•k•\ is used for <strong>the</strong> hunt or chase, pursuit.<br />

Vulgate has _persecutus est_. The personal story of Peter comes<br />

<strong>in</strong> here. "Simon's <strong>in</strong>tention at least was good; <strong>the</strong> Master seemed<br />

to be los<strong>in</strong>g precious opportunities and must be brought back"<br />
