26:2 {Cometh} (\g<strong>in</strong>etai\). Futuristic use of <strong>the</strong> present middle<br />

<strong>in</strong>dicative. This was probably our Tuesday even<strong>in</strong>g (beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

Jewish Wednesday). The passover began on our Thursday even<strong>in</strong>g<br />

(beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of Jewish Friday). {After two days} (\meta duo<br />

h•meras\) is just <strong>the</strong> familiar popular mode of speech. The<br />

passover came technically on <strong>the</strong> second day from this time. {Is<br />

delivered up} (\paradidotai\). Ano<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>stance of <strong>the</strong> futuristic<br />

present passive <strong>in</strong>dicative. The same form occurs <strong>in</strong> verse 24.<br />

Thus Jesus sets a def<strong>in</strong>ite date for <strong>the</strong> com<strong>in</strong>g crucifixion which<br />

he has been predict<strong>in</strong>g for six months.<br />

26:3 {Then were ga<strong>the</strong>red toge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> chief priests and elders of<br />

<strong>the</strong> people} (\Tote sun•chth•san hoi archiereis kai hoi<br />

presbuteroi tou laou\). A meet<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> Sanhedr<strong>in</strong> as <strong>the</strong>se two<br />

groups <strong>in</strong>dicate (cf. 21:23). {Unto <strong>the</strong> court} (\eis t•n<br />

aul•n\). The _atrium_ or court around which <strong>the</strong> palace build<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

were built. Here <strong>in</strong> this open court this <strong>in</strong>formal meet<strong>in</strong>g was<br />

held. Caiaphas was high priest A.D. 18 to 36. His fa<strong>the</strong>r-<strong>in</strong>-law<br />

Annas had been high priest A.D. 6 to 15 and was still called high<br />

priest by many.<br />

26:4 {They took counsel toge<strong>the</strong>r} (\sunebouleusanto\). Aorist<br />

middle <strong>in</strong>dicative, <strong>in</strong>dicat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir puzzled state of m<strong>in</strong>d. They<br />

have had no trouble <strong>in</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g Jesus (Joh 11:57). Their problem<br />

now is how to {take Jesus by subtilty and kill him} (\h<strong>in</strong>a ton<br />

I•soun dol•i krat•sos<strong>in</strong> kai apokte<strong>in</strong>•s<strong>in</strong>\). The Triumphal Entry<br />

and <strong>the</strong> Tuesday debate <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> temple revealed <strong>the</strong> powerful<br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g that Jesus had among <strong>the</strong> crowds from Galilee.<br />

26:5 {A tumult} (\thorubos\). They feared <strong>the</strong> upris<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> behalf<br />

of Jesus and were argu<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong> matter must be postponed till<br />

after <strong>the</strong> feast was over when <strong>the</strong> crowds had scattered. Then <strong>the</strong>y<br />

could catch him "by craft" (\dol•i\) as <strong>the</strong>y would trap a wild<br />

beast.<br />

26:6 {In <strong>the</strong> house of Simon <strong>the</strong> leper} (\en oiki•i Sim•nos tou<br />

leprou\). Evidently a man who had been healed of his leprosy by<br />

Jesus who gave <strong>the</strong> feast <strong>in</strong> honour of Jesus. All sorts of<br />
