Traditional names of <strong>the</strong> magicians who withstood Moses (_Targum<br />

aorist active (<strong>in</strong>transitive) of \anthist•mi\, to stand aga<strong>in</strong>st,<br />

"<strong>the</strong>y stood aga<strong>in</strong>st" (with dative \M•usei\). Same word used of<br />

Elymas <strong>in</strong> Ac 13:8 and repeated here \anthistantai\ (present<br />

middle <strong>in</strong>dicative). Paul here pictures <strong>the</strong> seducers of <strong>the</strong><br />

\gunaikaria\ above. {Corrupted <strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d} (\katephtharmenoi ton<br />

noun\). Perfect passive participle of \kataph<strong>the</strong>ir•\, old<br />

compound, <strong>in</strong> N.T. only here <strong>in</strong> critical text. See 2Co 11:3; 1Ti<br />

6:5 for \diaph<strong>the</strong>ir•\. The accusative \noun\ is reta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

passive. {Reprobate} (\adokimoi\). See 1Co 9:27; Tit 1:16. They<br />

had renounced <strong>the</strong>ir trust (\pist<strong>in</strong>\) <strong>in</strong> Christ.<br />

3:9 {They shall proceed no fur<strong>the</strong>r} (\ou prokopsous<strong>in</strong> epi<br />

pleion\). Future active of \prokopt•\. See 2:16. {Folly}<br />

(\anoia\). Old word (from \anoos\, a privative and \nous\), want<br />

of sense, here only <strong>in</strong> N.T. {Evident} (\ekd•los\). Old word (\ek,<br />

d•los\, outstand<strong>in</strong>g), here only <strong>in</strong> N.T. {Theirs} (\eke<strong>in</strong>•n\). Of<br />

Jannes and Jambres (Ex 7:12).<br />

3:10 {Didst follow} (\par•kolouth•sas\). First aorist active<br />

<strong>in</strong>dicative of \parakolou<strong>the</strong>•\, for which see 1Ti 4:6. Some MSS.<br />

have perfect active \par•kolouth•kas\ (thou hast followed). N<strong>in</strong>e<br />

associative-<strong>in</strong>strumental cases here after <strong>the</strong> verb ({teach<strong>in</strong>g},<br />

\didaskali•i\, Ro 12:7; {conduct}, \ag•g•i\, old word here only<br />

<strong>in</strong> N.T.; {purpose}, \pro<strong>the</strong>sei\, Ro 8:28; {faith}, \pistei\,<br />

1Th 3:6; {longsuffer<strong>in</strong>g}, \makrothumi•i\, Col 1:11;<br />

{persecutions}, \di•gmois\, 2Th 1:4; {suffer<strong>in</strong>gs},<br />

\path•mas<strong>in</strong>\, 2Co 1:6f.). The two last items belong to verse<br />

3:11 {What th<strong>in</strong>gs befell me} (\hoia moi egeneto\). Qualitative<br />

relative (\hoia\) referr<strong>in</strong>g to actual experiences of Paul<br />

(\egeneto\, second aorist middle <strong>in</strong>dicative of \g<strong>in</strong>omai\) more<br />

fully described <strong>in</strong> 2Co 11:30-33. The Acts of <strong>the</strong> Apostles tell<br />
