1:18. {Accord<strong>in</strong>g to godl<strong>in</strong>ess} (\kata eusebeian\). Promot<strong>in</strong>g<br />

(designed for) godl<strong>in</strong>ess as <strong>in</strong> Tit 1:1.<br />

6:4 {He is puffed up} (\tetuph•tai\). Perfect passive <strong>in</strong>dicative<br />

of \tupho•\, for which see 3:6. {Know<strong>in</strong>g noth<strong>in</strong>g} (\m•den<br />

epistamenos\). Present middle participle of \epistamai\.<br />

Ignorance is a frequent companion of conceit. {Dot<strong>in</strong>g} (\nos•n\).<br />

Present active participle of \nose•\, to be sick, to be morbid<br />

over, old word, only here <strong>in</strong> N.T. {Disputes of words}<br />

(\logomachias\). Our "logomachy." From \logomache•\ (2Ti 2:14),<br />

and that from \logos\ and \machomai\, to fight over words, late<br />

and rare word, here only <strong>in</strong> N.T. See Plato (_Tim_. 1085 F) for<br />

"wars <strong>in</strong> words" (\machas en logois\). {Whereof} (\ex h•n\). "From<br />

which th<strong>in</strong>gs." {Surmis<strong>in</strong>gs} (\huponoiai\). Old word from<br />

\huponoe•\, to surmise, to suspect (Ac 25:18), only here <strong>in</strong><br />

N.T. All <strong>the</strong>se words are ak<strong>in</strong> (envy, \phthonos\, strife, \eris\,<br />

rail<strong>in</strong>gs or slanders, \blasph•miai\), all products of an ignorant<br />

and conceited m<strong>in</strong>d.<br />

6:5 {Wrangl<strong>in</strong>gs} (\diaparatribai\). Late and rare (Clem. of<br />

Alex.) double compound (\dia\, mutual or thorough, \paratribai\,<br />

irritations or rubb<strong>in</strong>gs alongside). "Mutual irritations" (Field).<br />

{Corrupted <strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d} (\diephtharmen•n ton noun\). Perfect passive<br />

participle of \diaph<strong>the</strong>ir•\, to corrupt, genitive case agree<strong>in</strong>g<br />

with \anthr•p•n\ (of men) and reta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> accusative \ton<br />

noun\. {Bereft of <strong>the</strong> truth} (\apester•men•n t•s al•<strong>the</strong>ias\).<br />

Perfect passive participle of \apostere•\, old verb (1Co 6:8)<br />

with <strong>the</strong> ablative case after it (\al•<strong>the</strong>ias\). {A way of ga<strong>in</strong>}<br />

(\porismon\). Late word from \poriz•\, to provide, to ga<strong>in</strong>. Only<br />

here <strong>in</strong> N.T. "Rich Christians." Predicate accusative with \e<strong>in</strong>ai\<br />

(<strong>in</strong>direct assertion) <strong>in</strong> apposition with \eusebeian\, <strong>the</strong><br />

accusative of general reference.<br />

6:6 {With contentment} (\meta autarkeias\). Old word from<br />

\autark•s\ (\autos, arke•\) as <strong>in</strong> Php 4:11. In N.T. only here<br />

and 2Co 9:8. This attitude of m<strong>in</strong>d is Paul's conception of<br />

"great ga<strong>in</strong>."<br />

6:7 {Brought <strong>in</strong>to} (\eis•negkamen\, second aorist active stem<br />
