Paul's party or at Ephesus just before Paul left Timothy <strong>the</strong>re<br />

(1:3). \Epi<strong>the</strong>sis\ (\from epitith•mi\, to lay upon) is an old<br />

word, <strong>in</strong> LXX, etc. In <strong>the</strong> N.T. we f<strong>in</strong>d it only here, 2Ti 1:16;<br />

Ac 8:18; Heb 6:2, but <strong>the</strong> verb \epitith•mi\ with \tas cheiras\<br />

more frequently (Ac 6:6 of <strong>the</strong> deacons; 8:19; 13:3; 1Ti 5:22,<br />

etc.). \Presbuterion\ is a late word (ecclesiastical use also),<br />

first for <strong>the</strong> Jewish Sanhedr<strong>in</strong> (Lu 22:66; Ac 22:5), <strong>the</strong>n (here<br />

only <strong>in</strong> N.T.) of Christian elders (common <strong>in</strong> Ignatius), though<br />

\presbuteros\ (elder) for preachers (bishops) is common (Ac<br />

11:30; 15:2; 20:17, etc.).<br />

4:15 {Be diligent <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se th<strong>in</strong>gs} (\tauta meleta\). Old verb<br />

from \melet•\ (care, practice), present active imperative, "keep<br />

on practis<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>se th<strong>in</strong>gs." In N.T. only here and Ac 4:25.<br />

{Give thyself wholly to <strong>the</strong>m} (\en toutois isthi\). Present<br />

imperative second person s<strong>in</strong>gular of \eimi\, "keep on <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se<br />

th<strong>in</strong>gs." Note five uses of \en\ <strong>in</strong> verse 12 and three datives<br />

<strong>in</strong> verse 14. Plutarch (Pomp. 656 B) says Caesar was \en<br />

toutois\ ("<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se th<strong>in</strong>gs"). It is like our "up to his ears" <strong>in</strong><br />

work (\<strong>in</strong> medias res\) and stick<strong>in</strong>g to his task. {Thy progress}<br />

(\sou h• prokop•\). _Ko<strong>in</strong>•_ word from \prokopt•\, to cut forward,<br />

to blaze <strong>the</strong> way, <strong>in</strong> N.T. only here and Php 1:12,25. Paul's<br />

concern (purpose, \h<strong>in</strong>a\ and present subjunctive \•i\ of \eimi\)<br />

is that Timothy's "progress" may be "manifest to all." It is<br />

<strong>in</strong>spir<strong>in</strong>g to see a young preacher grow for <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> church will<br />

grow with him.<br />

4:16 {Take heed to thyself} (\epeche seaut•i\). Present active<br />

imperative of old verb \epech•\, to hold upon (Php 2:1,16), but<br />

here \ton noun\ (<strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d) must be supplied as <strong>in</strong> Ac 3:5 and as<br />

is common with \prosech•\. With dative case \seaut•i\. "Keep on<br />

pay<strong>in</strong>g attention to thyself." Some young preachers are careless<br />

about <strong>the</strong>ir health and habits. Some are too f<strong>in</strong>ical. {And to <strong>the</strong><br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g} (\kai t•i didaskali•i\). This is important also.<br />

{Cont<strong>in</strong>ue <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se th<strong>in</strong>gs} (\epimene autois\). Present active<br />

imperative of \epimen•\, old and common verb to stay by <strong>the</strong> side<br />

of a person or th<strong>in</strong>g. See Ro 6:1; Col 1:23. "Stay by <strong>the</strong>m,"<br />

"stick to <strong>the</strong>m," "see <strong>the</strong>m through." "Stick to <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess of<br />

fram<strong>in</strong>g your own life and your teach<strong>in</strong>g on right l<strong>in</strong>es" (Parry).<br />

{Thou shalt save} (\s•seis\). Future active of \s•z•\, effective<br />

future, f<strong>in</strong>ally save. Cf. 1Co 9:27; Joh 10:9.<br />
