1:28 {Whom} (\hon\). That is, "Christ <strong>in</strong> you, <strong>the</strong> hope of glory."<br />

{We proclaim} (\kataggellomen\). Paul, Timothy and all<br />

like-m<strong>in</strong>ded preachers aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> Gnostic depreciation of Christ.<br />

This verb orig<strong>in</strong>ally (Xenophon) meant to denounce, but <strong>in</strong> N.T. it<br />

means to announce (\aggell•\) throughout (\kata\), to proclaim<br />

far and wide (Ac 13:5). {Admonish<strong>in</strong>g} (\nou<strong>the</strong>tountes\). Old<br />

verb from \nou<strong>the</strong>t•s\, admonisher (from \nous, tith•mi\). See<br />

already Ac 20:31; 1Th 5:12,14; 2Th 3:15, etc. Warn<strong>in</strong>g about<br />

practice and teach<strong>in</strong>g (\didaskontes\) about doctr<strong>in</strong>e. Such<br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g calls for "all wisdom" {Every man} (\panta anthr•pon\).<br />

Repeated three times. "In opposition to <strong>the</strong> doctr<strong>in</strong>e of an<br />

<strong>in</strong>tellectual exclusiveness taught by <strong>the</strong> false teachers"<br />

(Abbott). {That we may present} (\h<strong>in</strong>a parast•s•men\). F<strong>in</strong>al use<br />

of \h<strong>in</strong>a\ and first aorist active subjunctive of \parist•mi\, for<br />

which see 1:22, <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al presentation to Christ. {Perfect}<br />

(\teleion\). Spiritual adults <strong>in</strong> Christ, no longer babes <strong>in</strong><br />

Christ (Heb 5:14), mature and ripened Christians (4:22), <strong>the</strong><br />

full-grown man <strong>in</strong> Christ (Eph 4:13). The relatively perfect<br />

(Php 3:15) will on that day of <strong>the</strong> presentation be fully<br />

developed as here (Col 4:12; Eph 4:13). The Gnostics used<br />

\teleios\ of <strong>the</strong> one fully <strong>in</strong>itiated <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong>ir mysteries and it<br />

is quite possible that Paul here has also a sidewise reference to<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir use of <strong>the</strong> term.<br />

1:29 {Whereunto} (\eis ho\). That is "to present every man<br />

perfect <strong>in</strong> Christ." {I labour also} (\kai kopi•\). Late verb<br />

\kopia•\, from \kopos\ (toil), to grow weary from toil (Mt<br />

11:28), to toil on (Php 2:16), sometimes for athletic<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. In papyri. {Striv<strong>in</strong>g} (\ag•nizomenos\). Present middle<br />

participle of common verb \ag•nizomai\ (from \ag•n\, contest, as<br />

<strong>in</strong> 2:1), to contend <strong>in</strong> athletic games, to agonize, a favourite<br />

metaphor with Paul who is now a prisoner. {Work<strong>in</strong>g}<br />

(\energeian\). Our word "energy." Late word from \energ•s\ (\en,<br />

ergon\), efficiency (at work). Play on <strong>the</strong> word here with <strong>the</strong><br />

present passive participle of \energe•, energoumen•n\ (energy<br />

energized) as <strong>in</strong> Eph 1:19f. Paul was conscious of God's<br />

"energy" at work <strong>in</strong> him "mightily" (\en dunamei\), "<strong>in</strong> power"<br />

like dynamite.<br />
