18:1 {Who <strong>the</strong>n is greatest} (\tis ara meiz•n est<strong>in</strong>\). The \ara\<br />

seems to po<strong>in</strong>t back to <strong>the</strong> tax-collection <strong>in</strong>cident when Jesus had<br />

claimed exemption for <strong>the</strong>m all as "sons" of <strong>the</strong> Fa<strong>the</strong>r. But it<br />

was not a new dispute, for jealousy had been grow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

hearts. The wonderful words of Jesus to Peter on Mount Hermon<br />

(Mt 16:17-19) had evidently made Peter feel a fresh sense of<br />

leadership on <strong>the</strong> basis of which he had dared even to rebuke<br />

Jesus for speak<strong>in</strong>g of his death (16:22). And <strong>the</strong>n Peter was one<br />

of <strong>the</strong> three (James and John also) taken with <strong>the</strong> Master up on<br />

<strong>the</strong> Mount of Transfiguration. Peter on that occasion had spoken<br />

up promptly. And just now <strong>the</strong> tax-collectors had s<strong>in</strong>gled out<br />

Peter as <strong>the</strong> one who seemed to represent <strong>the</strong> group. Mark (Mr<br />

9:33) represents Jesus as ask<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m about <strong>the</strong>ir dispute on <strong>the</strong><br />

way <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> house, perhaps just after <strong>the</strong>ir question <strong>in</strong> Mt<br />

18:1. Jesus had noticed <strong>the</strong> wrangl<strong>in</strong>g. It will break out aga<strong>in</strong><br />

and aga<strong>in</strong> (Mt 20:20-28; Lu 22:24). Pla<strong>in</strong>ly <strong>the</strong> primacy of Peter<br />

was not yet admitted by <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs. The use of <strong>the</strong> comparative<br />

\meiz•n\ (so \ho meiz•n\ <strong>in</strong> verse 4) ra<strong>the</strong>r than <strong>the</strong><br />

superlative \megistos\ is quite <strong>in</strong> accord with <strong>the</strong> _Ko<strong>in</strong>•_ idiom<br />

where <strong>the</strong> comparative is displac<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> superlative (Robertson,<br />

_Grammar_, pp. 667ff.). But it is a sad discovery to f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong><br />

disciples chiefly concerned about <strong>the</strong>ir own places (offices) <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> political k<strong>in</strong>gdom which <strong>the</strong>y were expect<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

18:2 {Called to him} (\proskalesamenos\). Indirect middle voice<br />

aorist participle. It may even be Peter's "little child"<br />

(\paidion\) as it was probably <strong>in</strong> Peter's house (Mr 9:33). {Set<br />

him} (\est•sen\). Transitive first aorist active <strong>in</strong>dicative, not<br />

<strong>in</strong>transitive second aorist, \est•\. {In <strong>the</strong> midst of <strong>the</strong>m} (\en<br />

mes•i aut•n\). Luke adds (Lu 9:47) "by his side" (\par'<br />

heaut•i\). Both are true.<br />

18:3 {Except ye turn and become} (\ean m• straph•te kai<br />

gen•s<strong>the</strong>\). Third-class condition, undeterm<strong>in</strong>ed but with prospect<br />

of determ<strong>in</strong>ation. \Straph•te\ is second aorist passive<br />

subjunctive and \gen•s<strong>the</strong>\ second aorist middle subjunctive. They<br />

were headed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> wrong direction with <strong>the</strong>ir selfish ambition.<br />
