<strong>Word</strong> <strong>Pictures</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> NT [2 Cor<strong>in</strong>thians: Chapter 10].<br />

metaphor. \Hups•ma\ from \hupso•\ is late _Ko<strong>in</strong>•_ word (<strong>in</strong> LXX,<br />

Plutarch, Philo, papyri) for height and that figure carried on by<br />

\epairomenon\. Paul aims to pull down <strong>the</strong> top-most perch of<br />

audacity <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir reason<strong>in</strong>gs aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> knowledge of God. We<br />

need Paul's skill and courage today. {Br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g every thought <strong>in</strong>to<br />

captivity} (\aichmal•tizontes p•n no•ma\). Present active<br />

participle of \aichmal•tiz•\, common _Ko<strong>in</strong>•_ verb from<br />

\aichmal•tos\, captive <strong>in</strong> war (\aichm•\, spear, \hal•tos\ verbal<br />

of \haliskomai\, to be taken). See on ¯Lu 21:24. Paul is <strong>the</strong><br />

most dar<strong>in</strong>g of th<strong>in</strong>kers, but he lays all his thoughts at <strong>the</strong> feet<br />

of Jesus. For \no•ma\ (device) see on ¯2:11. {To <strong>the</strong> obedience<br />

of Christ} (\eis t•n hupako•n tou Christou\). Objective genitive,<br />

"to <strong>the</strong> obedience unto Christ." That is Paul's conception of<br />

<strong>in</strong>tellectual liberty, freedom <strong>in</strong> Christ. Deissmann (_St. Paul_,<br />

p. 141) calls this "<strong>the</strong> mystic genitive."<br />

10:6 {Be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> read<strong>in</strong>ess} (\en hetoim•i echontes\). This very<br />

idiom occurs <strong>in</strong> Polybius, Philo, etc. "Hold<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> read<strong>in</strong>ess." In<br />

12:14 we have \hetoim•s ech•\ for <strong>the</strong> same idea (adverb<br />

\hetoim•s\). {Disobedience} (\parako•n\). Rare word (Plato,<br />

papyri) hear<strong>in</strong>g amiss (aside), fail<strong>in</strong>g to hear, refus<strong>in</strong>g to heed<br />

(cf. Mt 18:17 for same idea <strong>in</strong> \parakou•\). In N.T. only here;<br />

Ro 5:19; Heb 2:2. In contrast with \hupako•\ (obedience) ra<strong>the</strong>r<br />

than <strong>the</strong> common \apeithia\ (Ro 11:30,32). {When your obedience<br />

shall be fulfilled} (\hotan pl•r•th•i hum•n h• hupako•\).<br />

Indef<strong>in</strong>ite temporal clause with \hotan\ and first aorist passive<br />

subjunctive. Paul expects that <strong>the</strong> whole church will become<br />

obedient to Christ's will soon as came true.<br />

10:7 {Ye look} (\Blepete\). Ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>dicative or imperative.<br />

Ei<strong>the</strong>r makes sense but <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dicative <strong>the</strong> best sense. {Before<br />

your face} (\kata pros•pon\). They ought to look below <strong>the</strong><br />

surface. If it is imperative, <strong>the</strong>y should see <strong>the</strong> facts. {That he<br />

is Christ's} (\Christou e<strong>in</strong>ai\). Predicate genitive <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>direct<br />

discourse).<br />

10:8 {Somewhat abundantly} (\perissoteron ti\). Comparative,<br />

"somewhat more abundantly" than I have, <strong>in</strong> order to show that he<br />

is as true a m<strong>in</strong>ister of Christ as his accusers are. Concessive<br />

(conditional) clause of third class. For \ean te\ see Ro 14:8.<br />

{I shall not be put to shame} (\ouk aischunth•somai\). As a<br />

convicted impostor or pretentious boaster (Plummer). First future<br />

passive, s<strong>in</strong>gular number (not literary plural as <strong>in</strong> verse 7).<br />
