8:19 {But who was also appo<strong>in</strong>ted} (\alla kai cheiroton•<strong>the</strong>is\).<br />

Anacoluthon. The first aorist passive participle<br />

\cheiroton•<strong>the</strong>is\ is from \cheirotone•\, old verb to stretch out<br />

<strong>the</strong> hands (\cheir te<strong>in</strong>•\) and so to vote <strong>in</strong> public. The idea is<br />

that this bro<strong>the</strong>r was chosen by <strong>the</strong> churches, not by Paul. Only<br />

here <strong>in</strong> N.T. save Ac 14:23 where it means to appo<strong>in</strong>t without<br />

notion of rais<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> hands. In Ac 10:41 we have<br />

\procheirotone•\. {To travel with us} (\sunekd•mos\). Late word<br />

for travell<strong>in</strong>g companion. So <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>scriptions (\sun\, toge<strong>the</strong>r<br />

with, \ekd•mos\, away from home).<br />

8:20 {Avoid<strong>in</strong>g this} (\stellomenoi touto\). Present middle<br />

participle of \stell•\, old verb, to set, to arrange. So<br />

"arrang<strong>in</strong>g for ourselves this." {That any man should blame us}<br />

(\m• tis h•mas m•m•s•tai\). Literally, "lest any one blame us"<br />

(negative purpose with \m•\ and first aorist middle subjunctive<br />

of \m•meomai\. See on ¯6:3, only o<strong>the</strong>r N.T. example). {Bounty}<br />

(\hadrot•ti\). Old word from \hadros\, thick, stout, ripe, rich,<br />

great as <strong>in</strong> 1Ki 1:9; 2Ki 10:6. Only here <strong>in</strong> N.T.<br />

8:21 {We take thought} (\pronoumen\). Old verb, to plan<br />

beforehand (\pro-\) as <strong>in</strong> Ro 12:17; 1Ti 5:8. {But also <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

sight of men} (\alla kai en•pion anthr•p•n\). It is not enough<br />

for one's f<strong>in</strong>ancial accounts to be honourable (\kala\) as God<br />

sees <strong>the</strong>m, but <strong>the</strong>y should be so kept that men can understand<br />

<strong>the</strong>m also. A timely warn<strong>in</strong>g. Paul took <strong>the</strong> utmost pa<strong>in</strong>s that no<br />

suspicion could be attached to him <strong>in</strong> this collection.<br />

8:22 {Our bro<strong>the</strong>r} (\ton adelphon h•m•n\). Not Paul's personal<br />

bro<strong>the</strong>r, but a bro<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> Christ, one whom Paul had tested and<br />

was will<strong>in</strong>g to trust. It may have been Tychicus or Apollos, but<br />

we do not know.<br />

8:23 {About Titus} (\huper Titou\). There is no verb expressed.<br />

Supply "<strong>in</strong>quire." He endorses Titus up to <strong>the</strong> hilt. He is "my<br />

partner" (\ko<strong>in</strong>•nos emos\) and "fellow-worker" (\sunergos\).<br />

{Messengers of <strong>the</strong> churches} (\apostoloi ekkl•si•n\). Apostles <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> general sense of "sent ones" (from \apostell•\, to send) by<br />

<strong>the</strong> churches and responsible to <strong>the</strong> churches for <strong>the</strong> handl<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

<strong>the</strong> funds. {The glory of Christ} (\doxa Christou\). F<strong>in</strong>ancial<br />

agents, please observe.<br />

8:24 {The proof of your love} (\t•n endeix<strong>in</strong> t•s agap•s hum•n\).<br />
