Paul knew all about this.<br />

6:6 {In love unfeigned} (\en agap•i anupokrit•i\). Late and rare<br />

word (\a\ privative and \hupokritos\, from \hupokr<strong>in</strong>omai\) This<br />

is <strong>the</strong> only love that is worth while (Ro 12:9).<br />

6:7 {On <strong>the</strong> right hand and on <strong>the</strong> left} (\t•n dexi•n kai<br />

arister•n\). Offensive weapons (\hopl•n\) on <strong>the</strong> right, defensive<br />

on <strong>the</strong> left. See 1Th 5:8; Eph 6:11 for Paul's description of<br />

<strong>the</strong> panoply of God and Ro 6:13 for <strong>the</strong> phrase "weapons of<br />

righteousness," <strong>the</strong> only k<strong>in</strong>d that will stand <strong>the</strong> stra<strong>in</strong>. See<br />

also Book of Wisdom 5:18ff.<br />

6:8 {By glory and dishonour} (\dia dox•s kai atimias\). Here<br />

\dia\ is no longer <strong>in</strong>strument, but state or condition. \Doxa\<br />

here is glory. See Ro 9:21; 2Ti 2:20 for contrast between<br />

honour and dishonour (\tim•, atimia\). {By evil report and good<br />

report} (\dia dusph•mias kai euph•mias\). Play on <strong>the</strong> words with<br />

prefixes \dus-\ and \eu-\ and \ph•m•\. \Dusph•mia\ is a late<br />

word, only here <strong>in</strong> N.T. \Euph•mia\, old and common word, only<br />

here <strong>in</strong> N.T. {As deceivers and yet true} (\h•s planoi kai<br />

al•<strong>the</strong>is\). Paul takes up \h•s\ now <strong>in</strong> place of \dia\ which<br />

succeeded \en\. Note use of \kai\ <strong>in</strong> sense of "and yet"<br />

(adversative). \Planos\ is late word (Diodorus, Josephus) for<br />

wander<strong>in</strong>g, vagabond, impostor (cf. \plana•\, to lead astray, used<br />

of Christ, Joh 7:12). In N.T. only here; Mt 27:63 (of Christ<br />

by Pharisees); 2Jo 1:7. "In <strong>the</strong> Clement<strong>in</strong>es St. Paul is<br />

expressly described by his adversaries as \planos\ and as<br />

dissem<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g deceit (\plan•n\)" (Bernard). Such slander from<br />

one's enemies is praise.<br />

6:9 {As unknown and yet well known} (\h•s agnooumenoi kai<br />

epig<strong>in</strong>oskomenoi\). "As ignored (as nonentities, obscure, without<br />

proper credentials 3:2) and yet fully recognized (by all who<br />

really matter as <strong>in</strong> 11:6)." {And behold, we live} (\kai idou<br />

z•men\). Cf. <strong>the</strong> hazards of his life (1:8; 4:10; 11:23). His<br />

whole career is full of paradox).<br />

6:10 {Always rejoic<strong>in</strong>g} (\aei chairontes\). Even <strong>in</strong> sorrow<br />

(11:9; 1Th 5:16; Ro 5:3-5; 9:2; Php 2:18,27; 3:1; 4:4,15). {Yet<br />

mak<strong>in</strong>g many rich} (\pollous de ploutizontes\). Old word from<br />

\ploutos\ (wealth), to enrich. Spiritual riches Paul has <strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d<br />
