4:1 {We fa<strong>in</strong>t not} (\ouk egkakoumen\). Present active <strong>in</strong>dicative<br />

of \egkake•\, late verb (\en, kakos\) to behave badly <strong>in</strong>, to give<br />

<strong>in</strong> to evil, to lose courage. In Symmachus (LXX), Polybius, and<br />

papyri. It is <strong>the</strong> fa<strong>in</strong>t-hearted coward. Paul speaks of himself<br />

(literary plural). Can he not speak for all of us?<br />

4:2 {But we have renounced} (\alla apeipametha\). Indirect middle<br />

second aorist (timeless aorist) <strong>in</strong>dicative of \apeipon\<br />

(defective verb) with \a\ of first aorist end<strong>in</strong>g, to speak forth,<br />

to speak off or away from. Common verb <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> active, but rare <strong>in</strong><br />

middle and only here <strong>in</strong> N.T. {The hidden th<strong>in</strong>gs of shame} (\ta<br />

krupta t•s aischun•s\). They do attack <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>ister. His only<br />

safety is <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>stant and courageous defiance to all <strong>the</strong> powers of<br />

darkness. It is a terrible th<strong>in</strong>g to see a preacher caught <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

toils of <strong>the</strong> tempter. {In craft<strong>in</strong>ess} (\en panourgi•i\). Old word<br />

from \panourgos\ (\pan, ergon\), a doer of any deed (good or<br />

bad), clever, cunn<strong>in</strong>g, deceitful. See on ¯Lu 20:23. {Handl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

deceitfully} (\dolountes\). Present active participle of \dolo•\,<br />

from \dolos\, deceit (from \del•\, to catch with bait), old and<br />

common verb, <strong>in</strong> papyri and <strong>in</strong>scriptions, to ensnare, to corrupt<br />

with error. Only here <strong>in</strong> N.T. Used of adulterat<strong>in</strong>g gold or w<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

{To every conscience of men} (\pros p•san suneid•s<strong>in</strong> anthr•p•n\).<br />

Not to whim, foible, prejudice. See 3:1-6 for "commend<strong>in</strong>g"<br />

(\sunistanontes\).<br />

4:3 {It is veiled <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>m that are perish<strong>in</strong>g} (\en tois<br />

apollumenois est<strong>in</strong> kekalummenon\). Periphrastic perfect passive<br />

of \kalupt•\, to veil <strong>in</strong> both condition (first class) and<br />

conclusion. See on ¯2:15f. for "<strong>the</strong> perish<strong>in</strong>g."<br />

4:4 {The god of this world} (\ho <strong>the</strong>os tou ai•nos toutou\).<br />

"Age," more exactly, as <strong>in</strong> 1Co 1:20. Satan is "<strong>the</strong> god of this<br />

age," a phrase nowhere else <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> N.T., but Jesus uses <strong>the</strong> same<br />

idea <strong>in</strong> Joh 12:31; 14:30 and Paul <strong>in</strong> Eph 2:2; 6:12 and John<br />

<strong>in</strong> 1Jo 5:19. Satan claimed <strong>the</strong> rule over <strong>the</strong> world <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

temptations with Jesus. {Bl<strong>in</strong>ded} (\etuphl•sen\). First aorist<br />

active of \tuphlo•\, old verb to bl<strong>in</strong>d (\tuphlos\, bl<strong>in</strong>d). They<br />

refused to believe (\apist•n\) and so Satan got <strong>the</strong> power to<br />
