<strong>Word</strong> <strong>Pictures</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> NT [Mat<strong>the</strong>w: Chapter 15]<br />

15:28 {As thou wilt} (\h•s <strong>the</strong>leis\). Her great faith and her<br />

keen rejo<strong>in</strong>der won her case.<br />

15:29 {And sat <strong>the</strong>re} (\ekath•to ekei\). "Was sitt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>re" on<br />

<strong>the</strong> mounta<strong>in</strong> side near <strong>the</strong> sea of Galilee, possibly to rest and<br />

to enjoy <strong>the</strong> view or more likely to teach.<br />

15:30 {And <strong>the</strong>y cast <strong>the</strong>m down at his feet} (\kai eripsan autous<br />

para tous podas autou\). A very strong word, flung <strong>the</strong>m down,<br />

"not carelessly, but <strong>in</strong> haste, because so many were com<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong><br />

same errand" (V<strong>in</strong>cent). It was a great day for "<strong>the</strong>y glorified<br />

<strong>the</strong> God of Israel."<br />

15:32 {Three days} (\h•merai treis\). A paren<strong>the</strong>tic nom<strong>in</strong>ative<br />

(Robertson, _Grammar_, p. 460). {What to eat} (\ti phag•s<strong>in</strong>\).<br />

Indirect question with <strong>the</strong> deliberative subjunctive reta<strong>in</strong>ed. In<br />

<strong>the</strong> feed<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> five thousand Jesus took compassion on <strong>the</strong><br />

people and healed <strong>the</strong>ir sick (14:14). Here <strong>the</strong> hunger of <strong>the</strong><br />

multitude moves him to compassion (\splagchnizomai\, <strong>in</strong> both<br />

<strong>in</strong>stances). So he is unwill<strong>in</strong>g (\ou <strong>the</strong>l•\) to send <strong>the</strong>m away<br />

hungry. {Fa<strong>in</strong>t} (\ekluth•s<strong>in</strong>\). Unloosed, (\eklu•\) exhausted.<br />

15:33 {And <strong>the</strong> disciples say to him} (\kai legous<strong>in</strong> aut•i hoi<br />

math•tai\). It seems strange that <strong>the</strong>y should so soon have<br />

forgotten <strong>the</strong> feed<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> five thousand (Mt 14:13-21), but<br />

<strong>the</strong>y did. Soon Jesus will rem<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong>m of both <strong>the</strong>se<br />

demonstrations of his power (16:9,10). They forgot both of<br />

<strong>the</strong>m, not just one. Some scholars scout <strong>the</strong> idea of two miracles<br />

so similar as <strong>the</strong> feed<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> five thousand and <strong>the</strong> four<br />

thousand, though both are narrated <strong>in</strong> detail by both Mark and<br />

Mat<strong>the</strong>w and both are later mentioned by Jesus. Jesus repeated his<br />

say<strong>in</strong>gs and wrought multitudes of heal<strong>in</strong>gs. There is no reason <strong>in</strong><br />

itself why Jesus should not on occasion repeat a nature miracle<br />

like this elsewhere. He is <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> region of Decapolis, not <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

country of Philip (\Trachonitis\).<br />

15:34 {A few small fishes} (\oliga ichthudia\, dim<strong>in</strong>utive aga<strong>in</strong>).<br />

15:35 {On <strong>the</strong> ground} (\epi t•n g•n\). No mention of "grass" as<br />

<strong>in</strong> 14:19 for this time, midsummer, <strong>the</strong> grass would be parched<br />

and gone.<br />

15:36 {Gave thanks} (\eucharist•sas\). In 14:19 <strong>the</strong> word used<br />

for "grace" or "bless<strong>in</strong>g" is \eulog•sen\. V<strong>in</strong>cent notes that <strong>the</strong><br />
