of <strong>the</strong> Jews <strong>in</strong> crucify<strong>in</strong>g Christ (Ac 3:17) as <strong>the</strong> only hope for<br />

2:9 {But as it is written} (\alla kath•s gegraptai\). Elliptical<br />

sentence like Rom 15:3 where \gegonen\ (it has happened) can be<br />

supplied. It is not certa<strong>in</strong> where Paul derives this quotation as<br />

Scripture. Origen thought it a quotation from <strong>the</strong> _Apocalypse of<br />

Elias_ and Jerome f<strong>in</strong>ds it also <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> _Ascension of Isaiah_. But<br />

<strong>the</strong>se books appear to be post-Paul<strong>in</strong>e, and Jerome denies that<br />

Paul obta<strong>in</strong>ed it from <strong>the</strong>se late apocryphal books. Clement of<br />

Rome f<strong>in</strong>ds it <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> LXX text of Isa 64:4 and cites it as a<br />

Christian say<strong>in</strong>g. It is likely that Paul here comb<strong>in</strong>es freely<br />

Isa 64:4; 65:17; 52:15 <strong>in</strong> a sort of catena or free cha<strong>in</strong> of<br />

quotations as he does <strong>in</strong> Ro 3:10-18. There is also an<br />

anacoluthon for \ha\ (which th<strong>in</strong>gs) occurs as <strong>the</strong> direct object<br />

(accusative) with \eiden\ (saw) and \•kousan\ (heard), but as <strong>the</strong><br />

subject (nom<strong>in</strong>ative) with \aneb•\ (entered, second aorist active<br />

<strong>in</strong>dicative of \anaba<strong>in</strong>•\, to go up). {Whatsoever} (\hosa\). A<br />

climax to <strong>the</strong> preced<strong>in</strong>g relative clause (F<strong>in</strong>dlay). {Prepared}<br />

(\h•toimasen\). First aorist active <strong>in</strong>dicative of \hetoimaz•\.<br />

The only <strong>in</strong>stance where Paul uses this verb of God, though it<br />

occurs of f<strong>in</strong>al glory (Lu 2:31; Mt 20:23; 25:34; Mr 10:40; Heb<br />

11:16) and of f<strong>in</strong>al misery (Mt 25:41). But here undoubtedly<br />

<strong>the</strong> dom<strong>in</strong>ant idea is <strong>the</strong> present bless<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong>se who love God<br />

(1Co 1:5-7). {Heart} (\kardian\) here as <strong>in</strong> Ro 1:21 is more<br />

than emotion. The Gnostics used this passage to support <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g of esoteric doctr<strong>in</strong>e as Hegesippus shows. Lightfoot<br />

th<strong>in</strong>ks that probably <strong>the</strong> apocryphal _Ascension of Isaiah_ and<br />

_Apocalypse of Elias_ were Gnostic and so quoted this passage of<br />

Paul to support <strong>the</strong>ir position. But <strong>the</strong> next verse shows that<br />

Paul uses it of what is now {revealed} and made pla<strong>in</strong>, not of<br />

mysteries still unknown.<br />
