7:9 {I was alive} (\ez•n\). Imperfect active. Apparently, "<strong>the</strong><br />

lost paradise <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>fancy of men" (Denney), before <strong>the</strong><br />

conscience awoke and moral responsibility came, "a seem<strong>in</strong>g life"<br />

(Shedd). {S<strong>in</strong> revived} (\h• hamartia anez•sen\). S<strong>in</strong> came back to<br />

life, waked up, <strong>the</strong> blissful <strong>in</strong>nocent stage was over, "<strong>the</strong><br />

commandment hav<strong>in</strong>g come" (\elthous•s t•s entol•s\, genitive<br />

absolute). {But I died} (\eg• de apethanon\). My seem<strong>in</strong>g life was<br />

over for I was conscious of s<strong>in</strong>, of violation of law. I was dead<br />

before, but I did not know. Now I found out that I was<br />

spiritually dead.<br />

7:10 {This I found unto death} (\heureth• moi--haut• eis<br />

thanaton\). Literally, "<strong>the</strong> commandment <strong>the</strong> one for (meant for)<br />

life, this was found for me unto death." First aorist (effective)<br />

passive <strong>in</strong>dicative of \heurisk•\, to f<strong>in</strong>d, not active as <strong>the</strong><br />

English has it. It turned out so for me (ethical dative).<br />

7:11 {Beguiled me} (\ex•pat•sen me\). First aorist active<br />

<strong>in</strong>dicative of \exapata•\, old verb, completely (\ex\) made me<br />

lose my way (\a\ privative, \pate•\, to walk). See on ¯1Co 3:18;<br />

2Co 11:3. Only <strong>in</strong> Paul <strong>in</strong> N.T. {Slew me} (\apekte<strong>in</strong>en\). First<br />

aorist active <strong>in</strong>dicative of \apokte<strong>in</strong>•\, old verb. "Killed me<br />

off," made a clean job of it. S<strong>in</strong> here is personified as <strong>the</strong><br />

tempter (Ge 3:13).<br />

7:12 {Holy, and righteous, and good} (\hagia kai dikaia kai<br />

agath•\). This is <strong>the</strong> conclusion (wherefore, \h•ste\) to <strong>the</strong><br />

query <strong>in</strong> verse 7. The commandment is God's and so holy like<br />

Him, just <strong>in</strong> its requirements and designed for our good. The<br />

modern revolt aga<strong>in</strong>st law needs <strong>the</strong>se words.<br />

7:13 {Become death unto me?} (\emoi egeneto thanatos?\). Ethical<br />

dative \emoi\ aga<strong>in</strong>. <strong>New</strong> turn to <strong>the</strong> problem. Admitt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

goodness of God's law, did it issue <strong>in</strong> death for me? Paul repels<br />

(\m• genoito\) this suggestion. It was s<strong>in</strong> that (But s<strong>in</strong>, \alla<br />

h• hamartia\) "became death for me." {That it might be shown}<br />

(\h<strong>in</strong>a phan•i\). F<strong>in</strong>al clause, \h<strong>in</strong>a\ and second aorist passive<br />

subjunctive of \pha<strong>in</strong>•\, to show. The s<strong>in</strong>fulness of s<strong>in</strong> is<br />

revealed <strong>in</strong> its violations of God's law. {By work<strong>in</strong>g death to me}<br />
