The School of Madaba<br />

Piccirillo conducted thorough research, and published<br />

the mosaics of Jordan. He proposes (1989:<br />

324-342) that the School of Madaba is actually<br />

various teams of mosaicists that worked at Madaba<br />

and in the environs Mt. Nebo and Umm al-Rasas.<br />

Piccirillo maintains that these teams were<br />

influenced in their repertory and composition<br />

by other centres of the Byzantine Empire, and<br />

gradually developed examplars from the original<br />

Hellenistic period with the re-awakening of<br />

a Classical style which reached its peak in the<br />

Piccirillo dates 530 as the starting point of the<br />

golden age of Jordan mosaics. Among the earliest
