glasses from Jewish catacombs in Rome (Hachlili<br />

1998: 302-303; figs. VI-20-24; pls. VI-20-21).<br />

A pair of sheep flank the Torah shrine panel<br />

on the Susiya synagogue mosaic pavement; one<br />

sheep, damaged by iconoclasts, is crudely repaired<br />

(pl. X.2). A pair of lions flank a menorah on the<br />

mosaic in the nave of the Ma#on synagogue<br />

(pl. XI.1).<br />

Church pavements in Jordan show similar renditions<br />

of heraldic animals flanking inscriptions,<br />

but here the animals are horned. The panel in<br />

front of the apse and altar in the presbytery of<br />

Bishop Sergius church at Umm al-Rasas (Piccirillo<br />

1993: 174, figs. 331, 365) shows a medallion<br />

with an inscription in the centre flanked by<br />

a pair of rams and pomegranate trees. The lower<br />

mosaic in the presbytery of the North Church at
