63 1IIIIIE1111Elfl Id} The rest of the reference number indicates the chronological order in which the gauging stations in that particular sub-drainage region were opened, namely, the 11th station. It should be noted that the reference system of flow (and other) gauging stations was changed in 1989. Previously the letter "M" was used. This has been replaced by "HO·. For example, U2M27 is now U2H027. Further changes are reflected in Table J24, which provides a listing of gauging stations in Natal/KwaZulu. Table J23: Types of gauging stations/points maintained by the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry. Primary type Type Example of number Rowing water stations U2!:iOll (rivers, springs, etc.) Stored/standing water stations U2fi005 (reservoirs, lakes and dams) Meteorological stations - mainly evaporation U2£005 - A01; A02 (indicates evaporation measured using a Class A mm. a - 501 Symons mm. air temperature and precipitation measured - POl at that point. Note: Weather Bureau stations are provided with a Weather Bureau number, for example, 370/807 at Chelmsford Dam. Not all stations have a Weather Bureau number, as in the example where there is no such number) Secondary type AOl T4HOOl - AOl (indicates upstream gauge plate for Hand R stations) BOl T5H003 - BOl (indicates downstream gauge plate for Hand R stations) COl None in NatallKwaZulu (indicates crest tapping on crump weirs - where no inlet pipes are found) HOl V1R002 - HOl (indicates opening sizes of dam gates) KOl V1ROO2 - KOl (indicates opening sizes of valves at dams) MOl U3H007 - MOl (indicates a pipeline meter to determine flow rate) 001 T5H005 - 001 (indicates a water quality sampling point) .
