Note: (i) The data in the table reflect the current (1994) situation. The<br />

KwaZulu Training Trust (see above), is planning to provide several<br />

water and sanitation management training courses and modules in<br />

the near future.<br />

(ii) A National Community Water and Sanitation Training Institute has<br />

been established at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> the North, Private Bag Xll 06,<br />

Sovenga, 0727. The Institute will undertake the training <strong>of</strong> trainers<br />

in relevant skills as well as the direct training <strong>of</strong> community water<br />

and sanitation committees. Research will be undertaken on adult<br />

education with respect to water and sanitation issues. It is<br />

envisaged that the Institute will in due course establish water and<br />

sanitation training centres elsewhere in South Africa.<br />

(iii) The recently formed Durban Metro Water, P 0 Box 1038, Durban,<br />

4000, has established a plumbing school where a restricted plumbers<br />

course, as well as a water-service hand course is available for<br />

suitable peri-urban and rural trainees. Skills taught include pipe<br />

laying, trenching, backfilling; and the maintenance <strong>of</strong> valves, pipes<br />

and taps.<br />

Tertiary institutions undertaking training (at an advanced level), and which could or do<br />

impact on water and sanitation systems management include the universities <strong>of</strong> Durban­<br />

Westville, Natal and <strong>Zululand</strong>; the technikons Mangosuthu, M L Sultan and Natal; the<br />

Cedara College <strong>of</strong> Agriculture, and the 24 technical colleges in the province. The latter<br />
