(ii) Very few alternative and conventional technology demonstration
sites are found in South Africa. An important source of information
is the site maintained inter alia by the Institute for Agricultural
Engineering (formerly part of the Chief Directorate: Agricultural
Engineering and Water Supply of the Department of Agriculture),
now part of the Agricultural Research Council, Private Bag X519,
Silverton, 0127*. Other organizations involved with the site are
the Department of Mineral and Energy Affairs, ESKOM and the Solar
Energy Society of Southern Africa. A small static display (mainly
consisting of borehole handpumps) can be viewed at the Amatikulu
Primary Health Centre,- KwaZulu Department of Health, Private Bag
X2113, Nyoni, 3802. A wind energy demonstration and testing
centre has been established in Port Elizabeth by ESKOM and the Port
Elizabeth Technikon, Private Bag X6011, Port Elizabeth, 6000. A
research programme involving ESKOM and the Department of
Geographical and Environmental Sciences, University of Natal,
Durban, was initiated a few years ago at Mabibi on the shores of
Lake Sibayi - see the bibliographic database. Interested readers rnay
wish to approach manufacturers in the first instance. Some source
documents are listed in Section 2.2 of Chapter 2.
