ETHICAL APPROACHES AND THEIR APPLICATION<br />

IN HOTEL MANAGERS' DECISION MAKING<br />

Th<strong>is</strong> study aims at evaluating the ethical approaches effective for m<strong>an</strong>agers<br />

working at hotel business when making dec<strong>is</strong>ions. Ethics, in the working place,<br />

refers to the rules of the workplace that <strong>an</strong> employee has to comply with, along<br />

with the rules of society. In the study, the concept of ethics has been examined<br />

within theories of ethics, followed by a conceptual framework of making ethical<br />

dec<strong>is</strong>ions. The scope of the study cons<strong>is</strong>ts of interviews conducted with 60<br />

m<strong>an</strong>agers working in a chain hotel. The interview cons<strong>is</strong>ts of 5 different scenarios<br />

relating to ethical dilemmas. The scenarios are composed of three different ethics<br />

approaches (moral justice approach, subjective approach <strong>an</strong>d contract -based<br />

theoretical approach). In the <strong>an</strong>alys<strong>is</strong> of the data, the M<strong>an</strong>ova Analys<strong>is</strong> was<br />

carried out. The results suggest that m<strong>an</strong>agers prefer the contract -based<br />

theoretical approach more frequently in dec<strong>is</strong>ion making. It was also found that<br />

m<strong>an</strong>agers differ in their choice of ethical approaches in terms of the scenarios.<br />

Th<strong>is</strong> difference <strong>is</strong> caused by subjective approaches which are used when dealing<br />

with problems related to socio-cultural <strong>an</strong>d institutional reputation <strong>an</strong>d ecology.<br />

INTRODUCTION<br />

Ethics <strong>is</strong> one of the topics attracting the attention of researchers<br />

nowadays. Th<strong>is</strong> ch<strong>an</strong>ge in focus <strong>is</strong> basically because unethical <strong>an</strong>d amoral<br />

acts in the workplace have increased, <strong>an</strong>d the borders of the work<br />

environment have dimin<strong>is</strong>hed due to globalization. Thus, that the ways to<br />
