COMMUNITY - BASED TOURISM IN DEVELOPING<br />

COUNTRIES: A CASE STUDY<br />

Community-based Tour<strong>is</strong>m <strong>is</strong> gaining prestige all over the world as <strong>an</strong> alternative<br />

to mass tour<strong>is</strong>m. Th<strong>is</strong> new type of tour<strong>is</strong>m favours a contact with the local<br />

community <strong>an</strong>d the experimentation of different sensations. In th<strong>is</strong> paper we show<br />

a study carried out in El Salvador about the opinions that residents have in order<br />

to develop a tour<strong>is</strong>t destination based on the hospitality of hosts, on the<br />

remarkable ecologic resources of the area, <strong>an</strong>d in the import<strong>an</strong>t of the role of the<br />

residents. The methodology <strong>is</strong> based on <strong>an</strong> empirical study realized in a rural<br />

area from September to November 2008. Most outst<strong>an</strong>ding result <strong>is</strong> the local<br />

community perception that tour<strong>is</strong>t development c<strong>an</strong> create jobs <strong>an</strong>d generate<br />

wealth, although it <strong>is</strong> necessary previous technical training from private <strong>an</strong>d<br />

public institutions to fulfil these objectives.<br />

INTRODUCTION<br />

At the beginning of the 21 st century, a ch<strong>an</strong>ge was observed the tastes<br />

of tour<strong>is</strong>ts, who moved towards other forms of tour<strong>is</strong>m. Th<strong>is</strong> could have<br />

been due to knowledge of new destinations, up until that point unexplored<br />

by tour<strong>is</strong>ts, <strong>an</strong>d the search for a destination with greater focus on local<br />

customs, h<strong>is</strong>tory, ethics <strong>an</strong>d the particular culture of the destination. In<br />

th<strong>is</strong> sense, cultural diversity <strong>is</strong> looked upon as a me<strong>an</strong>s of enriching the<br />
