CONFERENCE REPORT<br />

Annual EuroCHRIE Conference 1<br />

Amsterdam, The Netherl<strong>an</strong>ds, 25-28 October 2010<br />

The 28 th <strong>an</strong>nual EuroCHRIE Conference was <strong>an</strong> exciting mix of high<br />

quality presentations, memorable events, key note speakers, <strong>an</strong>d industry<br />

professionals. It took place in Amsterdam from 25-28 October, 2010 <strong>an</strong>d<br />

was hosted by Saxion Hospitality Business School <strong>an</strong>d Stenden<br />

International Hotel M<strong>an</strong>agement. The org<strong>an</strong><strong>is</strong>ers w<strong>is</strong>hed <strong>an</strong>d achieved to<br />

create <strong>an</strong> open <strong>an</strong>d friendly atmosphere for academics, researchers <strong>an</strong>d<br />

professionals, thus allowing them to engage in d<strong>is</strong>cussion <strong>an</strong>d debate.<br />

Over 250 delegates gathered at the Mövenpick hotel to d<strong>is</strong>cuss the latest<br />

trends in hospitality <strong>an</strong>d tour<strong>is</strong>m. The Conference constituted <strong>an</strong> excellent<br />

opportunity to encourage academic <strong>an</strong>d professional cooperation.<br />

The Conference included contributions where innovation <strong>an</strong>d new<br />

ways of knowing played <strong>an</strong> import<strong>an</strong>t role <strong>an</strong>d also contributions related<br />

to the main theme of the conference, i.e. “Passion for Hospitality<br />

Excellence”. As it was highlighted in the initial call for abstracts,<br />

“Excellence in hospitality deals with m<strong>an</strong>y <strong>is</strong>sues, like customer<br />

experience, employee sat<strong>is</strong>faction, <strong>an</strong>d high quality st<strong>an</strong>dards; it requires<br />

<strong>an</strong> inclusive view for the use of space, the delivery of services, the<br />

building <strong>an</strong>d maintaining of relations, <strong>an</strong>d the responsible application of<br />

resources to generate value. These <strong>is</strong>sues present a number of challenges<br />

for education, research, <strong>an</strong>d business practice”.<br />

In total, more th<strong>an</strong> 115 research papers were presented during the<br />

concurrent sessions. The presentations covered m<strong>an</strong>y <strong>is</strong>sues, thus creating<br />

pleas<strong>an</strong>t dilemmas to delegates about selecting one topic <strong>an</strong>d presenter<br />

over <strong>an</strong>other. The conference attracted a highly diversified <strong>an</strong>d<br />

<strong>multi</strong>d<strong>is</strong>ciplinary academic audience <strong>an</strong>d was m<strong>an</strong>aged so as to ensure corelated<br />

papers were grouped cognitively covering, among others, the<br />

following thematic pillars:<br />

1. M<strong>an</strong>agement <strong>is</strong>sues (destination m<strong>an</strong>agement, operations<br />

m<strong>an</strong>agement, service quality, hotel development, food <strong>an</strong>d beverage<br />

health <strong>is</strong>sues);<br />
