ECOTOURISM AND ITS IMPACT ON THE REGIONAL<br />

ECONOMY – A STUDY OF NORTH BENGAL (INDIA)<br />

Ecotour<strong>is</strong>m, the nature based travel with emphas<strong>is</strong> on education, m<strong>an</strong>agement,<br />

development of sustainable tour<strong>is</strong>m product <strong>an</strong>d activity <strong>an</strong>d wellbeing of the<br />

local people <strong>is</strong> not simply a marginal activity to fin<strong>an</strong>ce protection of the<br />

environment but it has proved to be <strong>an</strong> engine of growth in m<strong>an</strong>y economies of<br />

the world. Eco tour<strong>is</strong>m has been recognized as the backbone of economies of<br />

m<strong>an</strong>y countries. North Bengal being the northern territory of West Bengal of<br />

India <strong>is</strong> fortunate for its rich ecotour<strong>is</strong>m destinations. The present paper will<br />

explore the ecotour<strong>is</strong>m l<strong>an</strong>dscape of th<strong>is</strong> tract of India. It will also reflect <strong>an</strong><br />

overview of its impact on the regional economy with six case studies. The paper<br />

will be concluded with some problems <strong>an</strong>d m<strong>an</strong>agement strategies of ecotour<strong>is</strong>m<br />

activity of the area.<br />

INTRODUCTION<br />

Tour<strong>is</strong>m <strong>is</strong> often seen as having great potential in developing<br />

countries which have subst<strong>an</strong>tial natural resources to attract tour<strong>is</strong>ts. It has<br />

been used as a strategy to promote regional development in both rural <strong>an</strong>d<br />

urb<strong>an</strong> areas <strong>an</strong>d thus tour<strong>is</strong>m has been recognized as <strong>an</strong> industry. The<br />

building of a tour<strong>is</strong>m cluster in developing economies c<strong>an</strong> be a positive<br />

force in improving outlying infrastructure <strong>an</strong>d d<strong>is</strong>persing economic<br />

activity (Amposta, 2009). Th<strong>is</strong> happens so that the tour<strong>is</strong>m clusters invite<br />

foreign exch<strong>an</strong>ge earnings, generates employment <strong>an</strong>d income in<br />

accommodation <strong>an</strong>d tr<strong>an</strong>sport sector <strong>an</strong>d souvenir industry <strong>an</strong>d accelerates<br />

the development of infrastructure (Richins & Scarinci, 2009). For th<strong>is</strong><br />

reason tour<strong>is</strong>m continues to be a favoured regional development tool for<br />

m<strong>an</strong>y governments around the world (Gronau & Kaufm<strong>an</strong>n, 2009; Brida<br />
