The Society
The Animal Protection Society Acción
Francisco e.V. was founded in January
1996, and is registered at the County
Court of Bremen under the number
5344 and at the Bremen central tax
office-tax number 71 609 05020.
The Society is non profit making and
recognised as a worthwhile cause to
support.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
The aim of the Society is to improve
the living conditions of animals living
mainly at large.
Our activities are centred on the
Spanish Mediterranean island of
Formentera.
In the execution of our work we
concentrate on tasks that we are
competent to carry out and that lie
within our resources.
We prefer to work on projects. We can
concentrate our efforts more
effectively, and avoid getting involved
in too many disparate activities.
Membership is not essential in order to
take part in a project.

THE STRUCTURE
The Society is run by the members’
meeting and the directors. The work of
the directors is voluntary.
MEMBERS
On 31.12.2000 there were 156
members. Many members are active in
other Animal Protection Societies and
in institutions concerned with animal
protection. The members live in Spain,
England and Germany.
The annual membership fee is DM 50.per
person. Family membership costs
DM 90.-
COLLABORATION AND
COOPERATION
Acción Francisco works very
successfully together with other animal
protection societies and receives a lot
of support from volunteers in Spain
and Germany.
The animal protection projects on
Formentera are planned and carried
out in close cooperation with the vet on
the island.
Acción Francisco e.V. is associated
with the Deutsches Tierhilfswerk e.V.
(German Animal Relief Organisation).

The Project
Acción Francisco was our first project
and provided the name for the society.
The aim of our work is to improve the
living conditions of stray cats on
Formentera.
As in other holiday resorts in southern
Europe, conditions are created by
tourism which the animals cannot cope
with naturally.
The kittens are born in the summer
when there is plenty to eat, only to die
in the winter from starvation or other
causes.
In order to create acceptable living
conditions for the stray cats on the
island, the problem of overpopulation
has to be tackled.
Acción Francisco organised the
neutering of almost 750 stray tomcats
and female cats up to the end of the
year 2000.
SUMMARY OF OUR AIMS

Since 1997 the situation on
Formentera has distinctly improved. At
the beginning of 1998 a Spanish vet
opened up an excellent veterinary
practice, which ensures that treatment
is available for the animals.
The fact that animals are being
treated and castrated on Formentera
has been accepted very positively by
the inhabitants.
The numbers of members and helpers
on the island have increased steadily,
enabling us to care for injured and sick
animals all year round, and to provide
food in winter in some problem places
The inhabitants and visitors have
become more aware of the improved
conditions for the cats on the island
and the animal protection personnel
from Acción Francisco are receiving
encouragement and support on
Formentera.
• Containment of the cat population through castration
• Feeding the animals through the winter
• Veterinary treatment for sick and wounded animals
• Increasing the awareness of the inhabitants of and visitors to Formentera of
the importance of animal protection
• Recruitment of people prepared to help with animal protection on
Formentera.
NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS DURING THIS YEAR
• At the instigation of Acción Francisco 130 stray tomcats and female cats
have been neutered at the CLÍNICA VETERINARIA FORMENTERA this
year.
• By using dried food we were able to help about 200 animals to survive the
winter. For this 0.22 DM per animal per day was available.
• We have spent approx. DM 13.500 on veterinary treatment.
• The Formentera Town Hall has congratulated Acción Francisco on its work
and requested the society ‘to continue with this necessary and useful task’.
• The number of members on Formentera in the year 2000 increased by 5.
Together with the volunteer helpers on the island they are putting in excellent
work.
• In order to achieve better publicity the Internet information about Acción
Francisco has been completely restructured.

Finances
The ‘Christmas presents’ from our
members and sponsors was a big
contribution to ensuring that the year
2000 was a financial successes.
Membership subscriptions covered
17% of the disbursements.
With almost 16,300 DM spent on food
for the animals, we have an increase
of 81% over last year. 11% less was
spent on veterinary treatment.
In comparison with 1998 it proved
possible to reduce postal and
telecommunication costs by 55%.
Administration costs made up 6.6% of
total disbursements.

ASSESSMENT
In 2001 Acción Francisco will be in the
position to carry out the castration
operation planned for February/March
without the need as in past years to
finance this with an overdraft.
We also have in mind to renew some
of the equipment on Formentera.
Especially the transport container,
which no longer meets safety
requirements.
The management wishes to thank all
members and sponsors for the trust
placed in us. With the publishing of our
accounts of income and the purposes
of expenditure we hope to retain this
confidence.

Future
Prospects
In
Conclusion
The main activity in the year 2001 will
be the castration operation on
Formentera planned for February/
March.
Furthermore we want to develop the
idea of people taking over responsibility
for the feeding places on the
island. Here there is the possibility of
recruiting people who would be glad to
do something for the animals, but for

supporters and friends with a brief
review of the most important events of
the last year.
As last year we have chosen this form
and intentionally restricted the scope
for reasons of economy. We have
literature about projects in greater
detail, which we can gladly send on
request.

the island who are prepared to help
care for the animals.
This becomes abundantly clear every
year in October and November, when
one has had to accept that no solution
could be found to help several animals
survive the winter.
