The four levels <strong>of</strong> qualifications are as follows:<br />

• Diploma (for <strong>the</strong> purposes <strong>of</strong> this study a diploma will be seen as a three-year tertiary<br />

qualification).<br />

• Degree (for <strong>the</strong> purposes <strong>of</strong> this study a degree will be seen as a four-year tertiary<br />

qualification).<br />

• Master's degree.<br />

• Doctorate.<br />

2.5.2 Summary<br />

The level <strong>of</strong> qualifications <strong>of</strong> <strong>an</strong> ideal GEL will be determined by <strong>the</strong> needs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academic<br />

institution <strong>an</strong>d what <strong>the</strong> level <strong>of</strong> qualifications <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r role players in <strong>the</strong> co-operative education<br />

environment is.<br />

2.6 EXPERIENCE<br />

Knox (1980:198) found that given <strong>the</strong> wide r<strong>an</strong>ge <strong>of</strong> topics taught in adult education agencies,<br />

knowledge might well include not only information gained in <strong>the</strong> classroom but also knowledge<br />

gained outside <strong>the</strong> formal educational system <strong>an</strong>d unrelated to degrees earned.<br />

The GEL must have a wide field <strong>of</strong> expertise to perform his duties effectively. He does not only use<br />

academic knowledge to implement <strong>the</strong> co-operative education programme. He must fulfil <strong>the</strong> roles<br />

<strong>of</strong> placement <strong>of</strong>ficer, counsellor, lecturer, marketer, etc., on a daily basis <strong>an</strong>d experience in <strong>the</strong>se<br />

fields c<strong>an</strong> only have apositive influence on <strong>the</strong> completion <strong>of</strong> his tasks.<br />
