2.4.27 Summary<br />

As with personality traits, it is quite obvious that it is expected <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> GEL to have awide variety <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>characteristics</strong> <strong>an</strong>d abilities. Knowledge <strong>of</strong> what kind <strong>of</strong> abilities <strong>an</strong>d <strong>characteristics</strong> is most<br />

import<strong>an</strong>t for <strong>the</strong> GEL to perform his duties effectively is very import<strong>an</strong>t to this study. Without this<br />

knowledge, <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> <strong>an</strong> effective pr<strong>of</strong>ile <strong>of</strong> such a person would not be possible.<br />

2.5 QUALIFICATIONS<br />

Peters (1973:47) determined that teachers occupy <strong>the</strong> role <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> experienced in <strong>the</strong> subjects in<br />

which <strong>the</strong>y have specialised. They are put in authority by <strong>the</strong> community because <strong>the</strong>y have<br />

qualified as authorities, to a certain extent on those forms <strong>of</strong> knowledge with which educational<br />

institutions are concerned.<br />

The GEL will have to have a certain level <strong>of</strong> education to be able to function effectively as a part <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> co-operative education process. He will be surrounded by highly qualified people in <strong>the</strong><br />

workplace <strong>an</strong>d in <strong>the</strong> academic institution <strong>an</strong>d must be able to st<strong>an</strong>d his ground in <strong>the</strong>se<br />

environments. The GEL must also have <strong>the</strong> relev<strong>an</strong>t level <strong>of</strong> qualifications to act as a person with<br />

authority in <strong>the</strong> academic environment<br />

2.5.1 level <strong>of</strong> Qualifications<br />

According to <strong>the</strong> feedback given dUring <strong>the</strong> situation <strong>an</strong>alysis (Appendix B) four qualification levels<br />

for <strong>the</strong> ideal GEL were identified.<br />
