2.4.19 Ability to Criticise Tactfully<br />

Sometimes it will be expected <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> CEl to criticise students or support personnel about <strong>the</strong> work<br />

<strong>the</strong>y have completed. The CEl must be able to criticise <strong>the</strong>se people with tact <strong>an</strong>d in <strong>an</strong> uplifting<br />

m<strong>an</strong>ner. Criticism must be delivered in such away that <strong>the</strong> person will not feel <strong>of</strong>fended or hurt<br />

2.4.20 Ability to Receive Criticism<br />

The CEl's actions <strong>an</strong>d work will always be open to criticism. He must receive criticism in a<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional <strong>an</strong>d mature m<strong>an</strong>ner <strong>an</strong>d be able to use <strong>the</strong> criticism constructively to improve his<br />

perfonn<strong>an</strong>ce.<br />

Rostron (2002:201) suggests <strong>the</strong> following seven steps to deal with criticism:<br />

• Adopt aposture <strong>of</strong> curiosity.<br />

• Be courageous <strong>an</strong>d ask questions to find out more.<br />

• Consider <strong>the</strong> merit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> criticism.<br />

• Establish what c<strong>an</strong> be done differently.<br />

• Ask if <strong>the</strong> criticism is valid or invalid.<br />

• If <strong>the</strong> criticism is valid, establish what c<strong>an</strong> be learnt from it<br />

• If <strong>the</strong> criticism is invalid, let it go.<br />

2.4.21 Ability to Give Praise<br />

According to Carrel, et al. (1997:198) praise, given for legitimate reasons, makes both <strong>the</strong> giver<br />

<strong>an</strong>d receiver feel good, reinforces correct actions, <strong>an</strong>d very likely leads to fur<strong>the</strong>r positive actions.<br />
