To develop <strong>an</strong> ideal pr<strong>of</strong>ile <strong>of</strong> a eEL it is import<strong>an</strong>t that <strong>the</strong> most import<strong>an</strong>t <strong>characteristics</strong> <strong>an</strong>d<br />

abilities <strong>of</strong> such aperson are understood.<br />

During <strong>the</strong> situation <strong>an</strong>alysis (Appendix B) a list <strong>of</strong> 26 specific abilities <strong>an</strong>d <strong>characteristics</strong> was<br />

identified as being essential for <strong>the</strong> eEL to perform his duties effectively. These abilities <strong>an</strong>d<br />

<strong>characteristics</strong> will be discussed in detail in <strong>the</strong> following segments.<br />

2.4.1 Student Oriented<br />

The eEL must have <strong>the</strong> ability to put himself in <strong>the</strong> students' position <strong>an</strong>d have <strong>an</strong> underst<strong>an</strong>ding <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ir circumst<strong>an</strong>ce <strong>an</strong>d needs.<br />

According to CUrIon (1997:259), <strong>the</strong> most import<strong>an</strong>t matter in affairs concerning discipline <strong>an</strong>d<br />

student counseUing appears to be <strong>the</strong> need to perceive situations <strong>an</strong>d problems as <strong>the</strong>y are<br />

perceived by <strong>the</strong> students,<br />

2.4.2 Acceptable as a Member <strong>of</strong> Faculty<br />

The faculty members should have pr<strong>of</strong>essional <strong>an</strong>d personal respect for <strong>the</strong> CEL. He must be seen<br />

as amember <strong>of</strong> faculty, even if he is not afull-time lecturer or shares <strong>the</strong> same <strong>of</strong>fice space as <strong>the</strong><br />

faculty members. The eEL must earn this respect <strong>an</strong>d accept<strong>an</strong>ce from <strong>the</strong> faculty members by<br />

making himself available to <strong>the</strong>se people <strong>an</strong>d by sharing relev<strong>an</strong>t information with <strong>the</strong>m<br />
